Larry Kart Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 Lyman Vunk (with Charlie Barnet and others -- even better if he played lead) Quote
Free For All Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 Some other great brass player names: Art Blatt Dudley Highnote ...both bass trombonists. Quote
Larry Kart Posted October 16, 2011 Author Report Posted October 16, 2011 The late Nelson Hatt had a good name for the job, too. Quote
Larry Kart Posted October 16, 2011 Author Report Posted October 16, 2011 "Conrad Gozzo" Not the best player but the best name. Conrad Gozzo is OK name-wise, but he's no Lyman Vunk IMO. I mean if we didn't know Gozzo's playing, that might be the name of some lounge lizard with a pencil moustache, but Lyman Vunk has to be a guy who weighs at least 250 lbs. and has a neck as wide as his shoulders. BFrank Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 What about Bob Seger's horn player: Alto Reed? Quote

I hear "Conrad" & I automatically think something like CONELRAD, high-pitched Cold War intensity (the few CONELARD broadcastas I heard as a kid scared the shit out of me, the sonic equivalent of getting hit in the head by a blunt object), and then "Gozzo" brings to mind "gonzo", off the chain crazymad, and to me, that combination pretty much sums up the sound of Conrad Gozzo to me. It took me a while to dig Gozzo, actually. That whole gonzo sound of his was not something to which I was intuitively attracted. But I got there. Quote
johnlitweiler Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 The two trombone players George Washington and Abe Lincoln. For a time they both lived in Los Angeles. According to Dick Buckley, they once were in a car together when they were stopped by a cop. Wish I could have heard that exchange. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 (edited) I've got Abe on an old Columbia LP doing some trad things - I bought it about 15 score and 7 months ago, of course, Earl Warren could've helped him with that whole Dredd Scott thing. Edited October 16, 2011 by AllenLowe Quote
