king ubu Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Just remembered that I do have one of the digipack-originals: "Live at Birdland" (I had one of the Impulse Masters editions with the accidentally shortened take of "Afro Blue" and hence upon finding out got the Originals edition). It says indeed: "Mastered by Kevin Reeves at Universal Mastering Studios-East". I wonder what "Originals" J.A.W. was talking about - I always assumed the boxes to contain the very same discs that were also sold separately.Same for "Crescent", btw, which I also just found... must have bought it because I love the album and it can't be listened to in original sequence in the quartet 8CD-set... time to listen to that one again! J.A.W. Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 (edited) I wonder what "Originals" J.A.W. was talking about - I always assumed the boxes to contain the very same discs that were also sold separately. If you read my post again you will see that it's a reply to Peter Johnson's post about Live at the Village Vanguard. Producer Bill Levenson said a few years ago when the series was being prepared that the "Originals" would be mastered by different people - Todd Whitelock being one of them - and that the original tapes would be used. It's confirmed on AMG that Mr Whitelock did the mastering of the "Original" of this album. These John Coltrane impulse! albums were mastered by Todd Whitelock and issued in the "Originals" series: ● Ballads ● Africa/Brass ● "Live" at the Village Vanguard ● Duke Ellington & John Coltrane ● Coltrane and these were mastered by Kevin Reeves: ● John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman ● Impressions ● Live at Birdland ● Crescent ● A Love Supreme ● Ascension ● The John Coltrane Quartet Plays ● Kulu Se Mama ● Meditations ● New Thing at Newport [edited to correct a grammatical error] Edited February 6, 2012 by J.A.W. king ubu Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Sorry about that - and thanks for sorting it out! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 Who was featured in the "Titans of the Tenor" concert? Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 (edited) Who was featured in the "Titans of the Tenor" concert? Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane were featured in the 1966 "Titans of the Tenor" concert. Edited February 7, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 I thought Sonny might have been there. Did they play together at the concert? Quote
JSngry Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 Although not billed, Yusef Lateef appeared with Sonny Rollins, & Pharoah Sanders + Albert Ayler were with Trane. More Tenors, more Titans! Quote
Cali Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Up, one last shot in case anyone knows the answer before preorder is over. Thanks! Looks like a ton of latter-day impulse single discs, including all the posthumous releases, are dropping stateside on 2/7. Did they do this with the previous volumes, and if so, can anyone speak to whether the single-disc versions are just "broken up" volumes? Or do they have that horrible "verve originals" packaging? I can't speak for the packaging but I'm very excited about these reissues, some I've never seen on cd. Amazon.com says they are remastered recordings on the Verve Select label. Some of the titles: SUNSHIP LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD AGAIN EXPRESSION COSMIC MUSIC INFINITY OM CONCERT IN JAPAN TRANSITION (which still seems to have "WELCOME" listed as "DEAR LORD") COSMIC MUSIC is about 24 minutes longer than the old release and Expression appears to be missing the bonus cut "NUMBER ONE". Needless to say, some of this is confusing. Quote

jazzbo Posted February 13, 2012 Author Report Posted February 13, 2012 I'd be very surprised if Manifestations were 24 minutes long on this cd! I think that's a listing error, I'd love to bre wrong. I sure hope they corrected that track error on Transition. If anyone finds they have please let us know, I'll buy the new cd. I can't get a response any longer concerning this from my previously responsive Verve person. Quote

That one track would be my motivation to buy this re-issue. You might know that, but anyway: There's no "Number One" on the version that's part of "The Impulse Albums: Volume Four" box. (Why am I saying this? Because I don't think the "new" single versions will be any different... and no, I'm not saying they might fix mistakes with an MP3... oops, I did it again ) Quote
jazzbo Posted February 13, 2012 Author Report Posted February 13, 2012 I don't believe that "Number One" is on this reissue. It's not listed on any of the major selling sites. And as Flurin notes, it was not on the corresponding cd in the Impulse Album Collection box set. Quote
JETman Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 I sent a followup email to Hip-O today. About three weeks ago they told me that they hadn't yet heard from the manufacturer as to when the replacement disc would be available. I'll report back if I hear from them. Quote
DMP Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Just bought Volumes 4 & 5 (my local store is calling it quits, everything is 30% off, another sign of the end of the world), after reading this discussion I'm almost afraid to open them, may have bitten off more than I can chew... Quote
