B. Goren. Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 One of my favorite musicians ever. I had the honor to see him on stage twice. Quote
7/4 Posted September 25, 2011 Author Report Posted September 25, 2011 What a jive tuba :-) I think it's too small to be a tuba....probably a baritone horn. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Happy Birthday Mr Rivers ! In person he is way younger than his years - here's wishing him all the best. Time to put on his Mosaic big box vinyl to celebrate. Absolutely younger in person. I got to shake his hand in Austin outside the Elephant Club. Many more happy returns Sam! Quote
paul secor Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Von Freeman will be 88 in eight days. He and Sam Rivers should do a recording together. I imagine they'd blow most of the younger set away. Quote
Pete C Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 There's a special place in my heart for Sam, as I was a regular at Rivebea when I was 18-19 years old. There was the music, of course, but also Sam & Bea's hospitality. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Happy birthday Sam. Many more to come.I saw him live May 2010 he talked about having internal bleeding and being the hospital for a few weeks. I do hope he is over whatever that was. Quote
Pete C Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 Tom M., remind me, do you have a website for your photos? They're worthy of a book. Quote
Justin V Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 Happy belated birthday to Sam Rivers. I'll be giving Fuchsia Swing Song a listen soon. Quote
marcello Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) Tom M., remind me, do you have a website for your photos? They're worthy of a book. That's very kind of you, Pete. Every once in a while one gets used for a publication or a cd. The last one was on Freddie Hubbard's "Pinnacle", and the next one will be on a Oscar Perterson recording for Sony Masterworks "UNMISTAKABLE". PHILLYQ Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 Has anyone heard anything recently about his health? I hope he's doing well. I was at the same concert as Hardbopjazz and it was my first time seeing Rivers play. Because of his health he couldn't play much, but what he did play was excellent. he made up for it by having Steve Coleman and Craig Harris as guests. Quote
