Adam Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 The John Woos are OOP, and get a nice price. Hi Medjuck, Thank you for starting the company! It's great! And do you know Mark Rance? Quote
BruceH Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 You guys are killin' me! I've been meaning to get the Criterion edition of My Man Godfrey for some time. One of my favorite screwball comedies. Should have asked for it for Christmas, damnit! Quote
sal Posted January 14, 2004 Author Report Posted January 14, 2004 Has anyone seen "Withnail and I"? What did you think? Quote
brownie Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Black Narcissus (Does this edition finally make it the most beautiful tecnicolor film ever?) some day. It does indeed, but it's a close race between it and Michael Powell's other masterpiece, THE RED SHOES. My favorite Michael Powell is 'Peeping Tom', the first movie of his I saw when I got interested in films. Missed on him as a kid when I was terrified by a showing of 'Thief of Baghdad'. And a film about dance by the name of 'Red Shoes' had no appeal for the boy I was. His other films were badly distributed in France. Got interested in his films decades later after reading articles about Powell (and Pressburger) by the likes of Martin Scorcese and Bertrand Tavernier. The films show up pretty often nowadays on cable TV over here. Was stunned by the number of masterpieces Powell and Pressburger concocted. Love 'The 49th Parallel', 'A Matter of Life and Death', 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp', 'I Know Where I'm Going'. And of course 'Black Narcissus'. Quote

LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP may be the next Criterion I purchase. I have the old laser disc of I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING--another wonderful film--so I don't feel the need to upgrade. Still waiting for A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH to be issued on dvd stateside. Can I assume you got over your boyhood disinterest in THE RED SHOES? PEEPING TOM is amazing and the film that destroyed Powell's career... Quote
Joe Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 PEEPING TOM still has the capacity to shock and disgust. Incredibly powerful film. Another of my favorite Criterions -- the Maysles' Bros.' SALESMAN. I wish CC would do MORE documentaries, matter o' fact. Quote

I'm a huge fan of the Maysles Brothers work and Criterion carries three of their films. btw, there's no doubt in my mind that David Mamet saw SALESMAN before he wrote GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS... Quote

Yes. the last time I saw him he was trying to do a complete Robert Altman collection. I was in the UK at the time as was Altman. Met Mark though Laura Mulvey who does the commentary track on Peeping Tom. Quote
BruceH Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 You can get it for around $26 at www.dvdplant.com + shipping, or 28 with free shipping at www.deepdiscountdvd.com Thanks for the tip, Berigan. One of these days... Funny that the Mayses bros.' Salesman should be mentioned; someone just highly recommended it to me, and I got it out of the library. Looking forward to it. Peeping Tom was one of those movies that could be said to be stomach-turningly ahead of its time. How's the commentary track on that one? Quote

Had a crush on Moira Shearer for weeks afterwards. Quote
BERIGAN Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 Well, since I own only one, my Fav has to be My Man Godfrey ! There have been so many crap public domain versions I was pleasently surprised that they restored it, and it looks great for a film from 1936. Also has a 2 minute blooper reel, and you get a hint of the blue streak of Carole Lombard posessed. Gregory La Cava directed this, and Stage Door the next year, and was more or less done after that, very strange. I want to get The Bank Dick,The Devil and Daniel Webster , Sullivan's Travels, The Lady Eve(Sturges best film, IMO) I do find their prices too high for the most part. Yet some films, like The Bank Dick, or Hopscotch are listed at $29.99, and the 2 Killers films are the same Average $39.99. I know you can get them for much less on the web, but still $40.00 in store for just one film is pretty damn steep...... If you like all of those, Berigan, be sure to check out Trouble in Paradise, and any other Lubitsch films that come down the pike. There was a great laserdisc box set of them, but they haven't all made it to DVD. Not zany in the same was as the Sturges films (and Palm Beach Story happens to be my fave), but incredibly funny& enjoyable. Adam, they ran Trouble in Paradise on TCM just a few weeks ago! Classic ending, eh? What other films of his were on the laserdisc set? Some of my favorite Lubitsch films are , The Shop Around the Corner , Ninotchka (MGM films, so I guess not to likely to get the Criterion touch) and even though few others seem to like it, Bluebeard's Eighth Wife ! I have heard mixed reviews of Cluny Brown, but would like to see it. Oh, "Desire", which he only produced(Forgot Frank Borzage directed it!) seems to have that Lubitsch touch as well! Quote

My recollection is that it contained several earlier ones - I didn't see them all. Definitely ONE HOUR WITH YOU, which is amazing - it's from the pre-Code talkie years, and there are some real eyebrow raisers. I think probably THE LOVE PARADE and THE SMILING LIEUTENANT. I think a couple more as well. The Shop Around the Corner & Ninotchka are also truly wonderful. I wish those would come out - actually, isn't SHOP out? ... Yes it is http://www.target.com/gp/browse.html/602-0...835?node=459314 That also says that Ninotchka is out, but I've never seen it, and Amazon says it is not yet released.
