sal Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 The Criterion Collection just released Roman Polanski's first film "Knife on the Water" on DVD. Has anyone seen this film? If so, what are your opinions of it? I'm a big Polanski fan, but before I spend $35.99 for a DVD of a film I've never seen, I'd like to hear some discussion first. Thanks! Quote
Brandon Burke Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 A close friend of mine just recommended it to me the other day. It's on my list too. Quote
brownie Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 'Knife in the Water' is excellent. One of Polanski's best. And there is a very interesting jazz score by the late Krysztof Komeda. Film and music are very intense! Quote
sal Posted January 14, 2004 Author Report Posted January 14, 2004 Intense is good in my book. Thanks for the help guys. Its on my list. Quote
patricia Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Absolutely. This was Polanski's first feature film and is excellent. It has tension, a good story and the soundtrack is perfectly realized. As David says, don't hesitate. Quote
Adam Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 One more In school once I wrote a comparison between it and Philip Noyce's "Dead Calm." I don't think Dead Calm is worth buying, and Knife in the Water is, but Dead Calm is certainly worth renting. Early Nicole Kidman. Two films about three people on a boat....and a lot more than that. king ubu Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 A GREAT FILM!! This is one of my ten or twenty favorite films! Love it, seen it several times in the movies and on tv (though I always prefer going to a theatre). ubu Quote
tonym Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 (edited) And if you love the score and want to hear more, Litania by Tomasz Stanko (ECM) revisits some of that soundtrack along with pieces from Rosemary's Baby. The reinterpretations are very evocative. Stanko worked considerably with Komeda so he know's his stuff. Indispensable IMO. cheers, tonym. Edited January 16, 2004 by tonym Quote

I think Stanko is playing on several Polanski soundtracks himself. Don't know about "Knife in the water". Bernt Rosengren and Bobo Stenson add very much to the success of "Litania". ubu Quote
