Jazztropic Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 I just got Appogee with Warne Marsh really nice.Does anyone here have some other favorites of this tenor player?I see another on the net that is cheep Late Night Jazz is this as good? Thanks Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 They may be expensive but the only other Christlieb titles I find worth buying are the two Criss Cross discs with Warne. Pete is a wonderful player. Quote
JSngry Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 (edited) There was a pretty decent local (L.A.) indie label release from the late 70s that had a few cuts w/Warne, but I forget the details. Correction, 1981. http://www.allmusic.com/album/self-portrait-r246024 Edited September 12, 2011 by JSngry Quote
felser Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Out of left field recommendation, but serious - Tom Waits 'Nighhawks at the Diner'. Very early (1975) live-with-audience-in-the-studio album, the only Tom Waits I've bothered to keep. It's the most memorable Christlieb I've heard (he's on constant display through the entire album), and quite a cast. Here is a portion of the AMG review: " Waits is a colorful tour guide of midnight L.A., raving over a swinging rhythm section of Jim Hughart (bass) and Bill Goodwin (drums), with Pete Christlieb wailing away on tenor sax between paragraphs and Mike Melvoin trading off with Waits on piano runs." brownie Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Those Christlieb-Marsh collaborations are wonderful! May I recommend the Lou Levy album 'Lunacy' on Verve. The CD came and went without the fanfare it should have had! Christlieb is excellent throughout. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 I found Christlieb's playing on this Jack Sheldon CD absolutely great - baritone included: There's also a duo with just tenor and piano on this CD - thanks to Jack Sheldon for such an unselfish attitude. Quote
medjuck Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Christlieb did a wild version of There's No Business Like Show Business for an HBO show I helped produced. We wanted to use Sonny Rollins version but couldn't afford it. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 Here are additional things with Pete Christlieb in a small group setting that I enjoy. Don Lanphere & Pete Christlieb - Get Happy - Origin Hadley Caliman & Pete Christlieb - Reunion - Origin Pete Christlieb / Bob Cooper Quintet - Mosaic - Capri John Leitham Quintet - Live - Cars John Leitham Septet - Lefty Leaps In - Cars Pete Christlieb - For Heaven's Sake - Cars Pete Christlieb and the Bill Ramsey / Milt Kleeb Band - Kelly's Heroes - Cars Conte Candoli Quintet - Sweet Simon - BR (Best Recordings) Pete Christlieb with the Lori Menchem Quartet - Live At The Jazz Cave - Cognito Andy Simpkins Quintet - Comin' At Ya - MAMA Ernie Watts / Pete Christlieb / Rickey Woodard - The Tenor Trio - JMI Frank Strazzeri and His Woodwinds West - Somebody Loves Me - Fresh Sound Christlieb also can be found on many big band recordings by such as Bill Holman, Bob Florence and Nat Pierce/Frankie Capp. It is interesting that in a published interview, (I believe it was in CODA) Warne Marsh referred to Pete Christlieb as the best or one of the best tenor players on the scene.
