A Lark Ascending Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 For the past few weeks downloading from all sources has been painfully slow on my computer. On Friday night we had two power cuts (very rare here) - only a matter of seconds in each case, but enough to confuse my Freeview box to lose its aerial settings (until reset). But immediately afterwards downloads were whizzing again! What's going on? Quote
king ubu Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 The attack of the extraterrestrians, no doubt... though they told me they wanted to start their invasion in Cornvall but their compass went wrong because of two short power outages... oh, wait Quote

Ever been to Penzance? Quote

It sounds like the power company (and/or phone company/cable company) may have fixed/replaced/upgraded something outside your house. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 Dowloading time is most likely at the mercy of your internet provider. So there may be no direct connection. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 11, 2011 Author Report Posted September 11, 2011 Dowloading time is most likely at the mercy of your internet provider. So there may be no direct connection. That's what I'd have thought. But I'd been downloading a few things dead slow just prior - in fact an amazon download was in progress and got interrupted. When I restarted it immediately after the outage everything was back to how it had been in July. Probably coincidence. Maybe God's way of telling me...something...Ever been to Penzance? If it had happened in Penzance the answer would have been obvious. Pirates. The attack of the extraterrestrians, no doubt... though they told me they wanted to start their invasion in Cornvall but their compass went wrong because of two short power outages... oh, wait Given all the choices in the world to launch their arrival I really can't imagine a bunch of ETs are going to head for Worksop. JSngry Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 I'm thinking that maybe the power outage served as an involuntary power-cycle of your modem/router/whatever. A power-cycle is always a good thing to try when things gets clogged, it's sort of the hardware equivalent of clearing your browser's cache and cookies. Quote

I have no understanding of these things but that was the sort of thing I suspected. Next time things slow down I'll sabotage the local electricity sub-station. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 Or if you're pressed for time, unplug your router or modem for about thirty seconds. Quote
