Chuck Nessa
I really don't understand the need for all the "Jew" references. Don't see anything like that for African Americans/Blacks/Negroes/etc. Don't see anything like that for Catholics, Protestants, etc. I don't see anything like that for non-believers or any other religious/ethnic group. Get over yourself and move on.

Get over yourself and move on. I will if you will It's actually a long, ahem, Jewish tradition, self-deprecating humor and just being publicly Jewish. It's sort of automatic and inbred, and to me harmless. As far as other ethnic groups not referring to themselves, I don't believe that for a second. People are too fucking uptight. Anyway, if there are a lot of Jews here, and there seem to be, and they (we) want to bond or whatever in a harmless way, what's the big deal? No one's getting hurt. As long as at the end of the day you see the big picture and similarities of everyone I don't see the harm. Just my opinion.

Larry Kart
Joel -- I'm Jewish, and to me it seems self-indulgent. One is who one is and wouldn't want to deny it, but would you want to be around someone from Scotland who reminds you ten times a day that he's Scottish and sees the world from a Scottish perspective? No, I said I was snotty and uncalled for. They conflated the two posts. Not my doing. But, sadly, I see my comment about relaxing that was meant for you does seem to apply. And what I delete or choose to leave is my business. I don't think it's gonna work out between us, Chuck, not to mention it's not important enough to become a sideshow and bore everyone else to tears. Someone please tell me how to 'ignore' and I will. I can't figure it out. And I really do wish you well. Edited September 17, 2011 by fasstrack
fasstrack
OK. I did it. And let's all move on.... Joel -- I'm Jewish, and to me it seems self-indulgent. One is who one is and wouldn't want to deny it, but would you want to be around someone from Scotland who reminds you ten times a day that he's Scottish and sees the world from a Scottish perspective? If it floats his boat who cares? I can't tell people what to do, but I'm relaxed with it. But if the consensus is that it offends that many people here I'll take one for the team and stop. Fair enough?
JSngry
I can go full-blown "Texan" if y'all would like. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Ya' think we're havin' fun NOW?LOOK OUT!!!!

Also, b/c I horse around, etc.---which is mostly what I've been doing re the Jew thing ---doesn't mean I see the world from a 'Jewish perspective'. About that I'm serious as a heart attack. I've spent a lifetime trying to build bridges, not stay on an ethnic island. That's a real turnoff. But, again, if it bugs people or they get the wrong idea, or interferes with the real intended message of unity I guess maybe I shouldn't do it. At least not here. With my friends, I guess... fasstrack
I kid because I love. And because I love, I have kids. No good deed goes unpunished, eh? One time Rickles was performing and singled out someone of Arabic descent (a fellow 'Semite', if you think about it). He ribbed the guy all show long. Then, at the end, he made a sincere brotherhood speech and said 'ladies and gentlemen, there's a gentleman here of Arabic descent, and I've been giving him hell all night. He's been such a good sport I think he should get up and take a bow'. Guy stands up. Smiles. Applause. 'GET THE ROPE!!'
johnlitweiler
I say get behind the guy in the spotlight who's at least doing something for the popularity and future of jazz. Take what you can get, even if it ain't perfect or to your liking, and run like a MFing thief. 2 Decembers ago a guy in Spain sued a jazz festival there because they presented Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core and he claimed that group was not jazz. The judge agreed and awarded the guy a huge sum of $$. Does anyone know if that festival ever was held again? Wynton, when he learned about this, sent the guy who sued a collection of all his CDs, big band, little bands. That, to me, is Wynton's contribution to jazz. That and his attempts to revive his fading career by recording with former pop stars like Eric Clapton and Willie Can't-Sing-in-Tune Nelson. But I'm feeling a little uneasy, because this board is usually not field for "Rickles-esue" humor, and I can understand why. So, I'm gonna quit while I'm behind, go watch that ballgame, maybe pull this one out before bed: and remember back to those mid-60s late-nite spots, mostly on Carson...I don't know that that stuff would even get on today! johnlitweiler
Am I the only person here with "personal interactions" with Bloomfield? Just curious. Here's a lack of interaction. In the summer of 1962 I lived a few weeks in the old commune building at 61st and Ellis in Chicago, on the first floor. In the basement lived some young partying guys, but I don't recall hearing any music. Nevertheless, they were Paul Butterfield and some other musicians, I learned years later.
