Late Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Moderato to andante (approximately). I was listening to a (slowish) Max Roach solo today, and it struck me how drums solos are (or seem) rarely on the slow side. Holding back (or paring down) seems a lonely attribute of most drummers. Any slow solos come to mind? Recommend some. And discuss! Quote
mikeweil Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 For most it's harder to do, as it requires excellent timing and control ... Mel Lewis solo on Brushes was the first that came to my mind, but I will look for more. It's on this CD: Quote
mracz Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 I remember a wonderful Shelley Manne slow solo on Autumn in New York from the 50's duet album with Shorty Rogers (or is it a trio with Giuffre?). Very melodic, beautifully structured, and it swings. Haven't heard it in years, must look it up. Quote
Dave James Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Not sure if this qualifies in terms of it's "slowness", but since it's Joe Morello, the absolute master of time, it's worth watching. Sorry about the overlays, but they came with the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6f9IMl9HVo Quote
mjazzg Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Most of Paul Motian's drum solos seem to qualify to me. Also Barry Altshcul's on Paul Bley's Ballads [ECM] Quote
Free For All Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Jeff Hamilton on brushes on "Back Home Again In Indiana" on the Clayton-Hamilton recording "Explosive". Elvin Jones on brushes on "Shiny Stockings" on "Heavy Sounds". Quote
Joe Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 (edited) Ed Blackwell, "Augmented" (from the Black Saint OLD AND NEW DREAMS), has long been a favorite. Edited September 9, 2011 by Joe Quote
BruceH Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Speaking of Morello, he has a superb drum solo on "Calcutta Blues," the last track on Jazz Impressions of Eurasia; pretty slow and laid back, too, compared to most. Quote

Michael Weiss Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 This wasn't recorded but I wish it was: I remember hearing Moody in Chicago around 1979. He gave Wilbur Campbell a solo on Body and Soul, which he played on mallets. At least a whole chorus. Quote
randyhersom Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Yet another reason to listen to Peace by Walt Dickerson - Andrew Cyrille continues the mood beautifully. Quote
