I met Donald Elfman at a Joel Forrester show and told him how indebted I was to him for putting out the Handy Columbias when he was at Koch.

The CD I have of In the Vernacular sounds poorly mastered. I wonder if the flaws are in the original source.

I doubt it. I've got the original LP, and although the vinyl ain't the greatest, the sound is good.

Kept away from the vinyls because I could not get any copy at a decent price.

Now that the music is available on CD and the price is right, I am happy I stayed away.

I can enjoy the playing but those two Roulette sessions do not grab me as Handy's early Columbias did!

I agree, and they also don't nearly compare with Handy's work with Mingus at the time. His playing on Wonderland and Mingus Dynasty in particular is impeccable.

"Mingus in Wonderland" is ever-amazing!

It was both Handy's and Booger's recording debut, wasn't it? That long, fast blues with their exchanges is amazing!

Ha ha, you said BOOGER.

Anyway, I agree, that's an awesome track.
