Hardbopjazz Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 There are some of his compositions no matter how many times I hear Monk or someone play them where I can't give the title. Bright Mississippi and Trinkle, Tinkleis are two for me. I know there would be others. Does anyone here know the titles to all the compositions where you hear it played? Quote
BillF Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 One of the most frustrating things - and it happens to me all the time - is not to be able to put a name to a tune you know - and I know hundreds - or is it thousands? I can sometimes get there by identifying the sort of music; this may lead to the artist and that may lead to the title. (Sorry this doesn't answer your question on Monk. ) Quote
Quincy Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 I can whistle where it's going to go. I'm terrible with names of most everything, but especially titles of instrumentals. Even those that I love, like Monk's. I can take sometime satisfaction when I can guess the album(s) the "unknown" song is on. Quote
paul secor Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 I can recognize tunes and hum them - not just Monk's but also other jazz tunes - but titles are a different deal. Just can't remember a lot of them. Same thing with some book tiles - they just don't always kick in. Quote
JSngry Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 I'm going to very hesitantly say that on a good day I...probably can. That comes from having played most of them at least once or twice, if only in a cursory manner. Wait..no...I can't hum "Gallop's Gallop" right now, so there's one, although if I heard it, maybe I'd know it's name...but maybe not. Probably a few more like that too...so, ok, most of them, yeah. But probably not all. Being able to sing/play/hum/etc the tune when you hear the name, that's not the same thing, is it... Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 Apart from 'Round Midnight, I'm always stuck. Unless I know a vocal version. Then the words materialise in my brain and I get it. Happens with Kenny Wheeler tunes too. Quote
Jim R Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 No, just as I can't name every Monk hat when I see it. Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 I'm like Bill F except that while I know substantially fewer tunes, I am equally clueless about naming them. I think we've talked about this general situation before, one major aggravation at concerts is hearing something that is so darn familiar but not being able to name it. Then of course the artist doesn't say either, and the tune sticks in your head, daring you to name it which you never do ... This especially tortured me the first time I heard "Cantaloop" on MTV. It was used as background music, maybe on the Real World, so it wasn't a matter of listening to the end of a video to find out. I knew that damn song and could not figure it out for a good hour until I finally stumbled across the Herbie CD. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 I usually know it's a Monk tune when I hear it, but often can't name them. I know some of them by name just by hearing them--Round Midnight, Straight No Chaser, Ruby My Dear, Brilliant Corners, Balue Bolivar Blues, Jackie-ing, I Mean You, Ask Me Now, Epistrophy, Misterioso, Pannonica, Crepuscule With Nellie, some others which are not coming to mind right now. Oddly, I find that it helps me identify the titles when they were covered by other artists, when I know those cover versions well. I can hear the recorded cover version in my head and it helps me name the tune. I think that this may be because there is only one Monk tune on the albums in question. Quote

And, as a musician, you're way ahead of most folks - or at least me - with that one. Quote
ejp626 Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 I am terrible, terrible with song names, even standards that I probably "should know." I was just in the airport late at night and they were playing some jazz, and I was having a lot of trouble placing it. Suddenly I realized it was indeed Monk, and one of the more famous ones -- possibly Crepuscule with Nellie or Rythm-a-Ning -- but I wasn't sure which. Very frustrating. Still, the music was nice and a lot better than standard airport fare. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 Agnus Dei, Kyrie, Credo... Sorry! Quote
medjuck Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 (edited) I can recognize quite a few by name though I haves to admit that in some cases it's because I've heard lyrics put to them. However aren't there a few that are similar to each other? Is there one that sounds a lot like" Well You Needn't"? Edited August 31, 2011 by medjuck Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 Yes, mostly, with the caveats that I tend to confuse "Skippy" and "Humph," and I can never remember how "Eronel" goes. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 31, 2011 Report Posted August 31, 2011 LOL! Monk has always been someone whose compositions' titles I have a mental block about. Much more so than any other composer. Quote

7/4 Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 LOL! Monk has always been someone whose compositions' titles I have a mental block about. Much more so than any other composer. Same with me. He uses a lot of signature tricks in different tunes. This makes 'em sound similar. I usually know it's Monk, sometimes I know the name. There's a bunch of 'em I know how to play the heads. Quote

There's a bunch of 'em I know how to play the heads. Yes, he did a lot of this. He would have a particular note fall on the first beat then the next time that note would be on the second beat, the next measure it would be on the third beat. I picked that out in a lot of his compositions. Right now I can remember which ones to use as an example. Quote
