chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 was ready the chronology of art blakey and the jms, and came across this: May 20, 1972: Lee Morgan Memorial Concert, Lincoln Center, NYC [blakey participated] [db 6/26/72 p.11] does anyone have that issue of downbeat with that mention, or besides that does anyone know about this? Quote
bertrand Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 The chronology in Jeff McMillan's Lee Morgan bio states that Lincoln Center has no record of this event. In other words, the only information we have that this ever happened is the db article. Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 I should have this issue at home. Gimme a day or two to look for it. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 If you have read Jimmy Heath's autobiography, he talks about teaching at jazz mobile one Saturday morning when Lee Morgan walks in with a woman. He interrupts Jimmy's class and says, "Hey Jimmy, look at my new lady." Jimmy said he didn't like being interrupted, and also he knew Lee had a woman that he had been with for some time. Odd seeing him with another. That night, Lee was shot and killed at Slugs by the woman he was cheating on. Anyone ever see or hear the performance Lee and his band did on the PBS show "Soul"? It was done just days before he died. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 21, 2011 Author Report Posted August 21, 2011 soul was -days- before he died? Quote

JSngry Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 (edited) Here's the DB page in question, just a very slight mention, about halfway through the "Strictly Ad Lib" column. No indication of who the db correspondent was who caught the concert featuring Mr. Blakie. Edited August 21, 2011 by JSngry Quote

JSngry Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 Or Billy! Horace & his group were also showcased on that same episode. Horace & Lee did not play together. Not sure if this is a clip of Horace from that show...looks like it could be... Quote

sidewinder Posted August 21, 2011 Report Posted August 21, 2011 (edited) Jymie Merritt on bass. Reputedly Morgan's common-law wife Helen Moore was in the audience for that 'Soul' filming too. Edited August 22, 2011 by sidewinder Quote

The "Guests" list must read that these three Blue Note artists performed with their respective groups, it seems. Quote

And Billy Harper from the playing and the modal type tune, which is his thing. I'm not sure about Jymie Merritt, what he looks like, but he would be a little older looking by '72, I think. This guy reminded me of Arthur Harper, from Philly. Couldn't swear either way Quote

With Horace I pinned for sure: Bob Cranshaw, bass; Cecil Bridgewater, trumpet. Don't know the guitarist or the others. I'm a big fan of Andy Bey too, and I'll just say Horace can do no wrong. Except when writing lyrics like these........... Quote
JSngry Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 Did Arthur Harper play the Ampeg Baby Bass? Quote

JSngry Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 Pretty sure it's Merritt. He was playing the Ampeg at the time & was in Morgan's working group of the time as well. Would have been only 45 at the time. Quote

Jymie was probably mid-40's at this time. guessing the trumpet was Jimmy Owens and the sax, maybe Harold Vick?!? Quote

B. Clugston Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 The song they are playing was written by Jymie. ("Angela.") Quote
Cali Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 One of the video clips here introduces all of the artists. Jymie Merritt is introduced as well as Billy Harper, Cecil Bridgewater, Harold Vick and others. Quote
