Yes indeed! They happen to have very good prices on a lot of things, but I still don't regularly check them... have to get used to doing so!

Thanks!

if someone winds up with this i'm very curious of its sound quality. has it been remastered? simply transferred? hip-o gets high marks for this on all the sets i have, so if they present this material in a cleaned up fashion (i.e. at least as clean as the lpr series) then i could be pursuaded. some of the verve material ('tequila' and 'california dreaming' especially) suffer sonically. seeing that that these two were never part of the lpr series, it could be the tipping point for me.

Now that I think about it, and if memory serves, everything was reissued at some point:

Movin Wes - VME

Bumpin - VME

Tequila - VME

California Dreamin - Verve Original

Goin Out Of My Head - Verve Original

Smokin at the Half Note - VME

Jimmy and Wes: The Dynamic Duo - VME

The Further Adventures of Jimmy and Wes (not sure if this was ever part of a series, but it had that yellow-and-black format on the side of the jewel case like so many of the discs that came out in the mid-to-late 90's)

Willow Weep for Me - LPR

There's a blog in German language: http://wesmontgomery.de/

I find his discographical meanderings typical German jazz enthusiast style, not very deep or thoroughly researched, but he posts some nice videos and photos, and even a link to a rare Wes live recording.

Thanks for mentioning my blog anyway ;-)

I emailed Marc Myers who wrote the liner notes to ask about whether this edition was newly remastered. Stay tuned.

Marc's reply: yes re re-mastering. kevin reeves at sterling sound.

Just shipped by Amazon.it !

Hmmm .... ordering from amazon.it would be € 6 cheaper than my local retailer ...

Safely arrived today from Amazon.it. It is a LOVELY box. Can't wait to go home amd listen to it .Some comparisons must be made, since all of the contents are in my (and most of us I assume) collection in various incarnations... crazy...

Easy for me to decide to buy this since I only have a few of the albums already. The sound on this is exceptional although I haven't A/B'ed. The package is up to the usual Hip-O standards. Definitely a worthy purchase for me, or for anyone who doesn't already have most of this.

Still waiting... never owned the second Jimmy & Wes disc and never even heard "Tequila", but the rest of it I've got already - and I reckon I won't part with the "Impressions" 2CD package anyway, because it's still the best way to have the great Half Note sessions (the official half that is) in one place.

Anyway, I'm a fan of these 7" Hip-O boxes and am looking forward to #6 in my collection :)

Which are the other five?

I have the Ella/Hollywood and Getz 7" Hip-O Boxes.

Got the Ella, the Peterson (both locally, half price in a closing store... otherwise they'd have been ridiculously priced here!), then more recently - all thanks to this thread - the Getz, the Nat Cole and the Dinah Washington.

But please don't ask me about sound issues etc. - I'm no audiophile, and with the exception of horrendous RVGs such as "Capuchin Swing", or old dead Columbia CDs, I can rarely tell if something sounds really bad.

I will try to purchase what I do not have since they are not available for ever (it seems the Peterson is not anymore widely available).

The sound in the Wes box is exceptionally good!

Just in case: there are other jazz releases from Hip-O-Select, some also in this 7" format:

Billie Holiday - Decca & Commodore Masters (3CD)

Clifford Brown - The Emarcy Master Takes (4CD)

Also, there's an Abbey Lincoln 3CD set.

None of these is of interest to me (not a big fan of Abbey's, and the rest I have in older but more complete editions).

I might be interested in (but don't yet know much about) these:

Lena Horne Sings: The M-G-M Singles Collection (1CD)

Jimmy Smith - Respect/Livin' It Up (1CD)

Louis Armstrong - Hello, Louis! The Hit Years (1963-1969) (2CD)

The Hollywood Bowl release (and I think also the Ella in Japan) has been discussed elsewhere, it comes in a nice but small book (jewel case sized, same packaging for the Ella set).

There's more: Coltrane, McLaughlin, and the lovely Creed Taylor Impulse set.
