felser Posted June 6, 2019 Author Report Posted June 6, 2019 And 'Elegia' comes out next month. Now we just need 'Tori', hoping maybe they'll do that one in September. 'Treasures' is a wonderful album, especially the awesome "Griot", where Cecil McBee is amazing. Quote

The only Lloyd McNeill I have is Washington Suite (on CD), but I suppose I really ought to consider getting some more then. Quote

And hope for 'Tori'. Quote

mikeweil Posted July 2, 2019 Report Posted July 2, 2019 Turns out I have a download of Tori on some hard drive. I'll get a a copy of a future CD reissue, anyway. This is a 1997 CD of improvised duets with pianist Richard Kimball. They never get atonal, stay free of clichés and superficial free music patterns, still make an impression of totally free improvisation. Recommended. But hard to find ..... https://www.discogs.com/Lloyd-McNeill-Richard-Kimball-XTemPorE/release/7574714 Quote

Not expensive or hard to find in USA. $9.99 on Amazon Prime. Looks like Elegia release has been postponed to September 20. And I do hope Tori makes it to CD in these reissues. Quote
mjazzg Posted July 4, 2019 Report Posted July 4, 2019 Just ordered a copy. Thanks for highlighting it. I'm not sure how I missed it's existence earlier, very careless of me. Quote
mikeweil Posted July 4, 2019 Report Posted July 4, 2019 I got the only copy of the CD with Kimball on discogs for about the same prize, didn't look on amazon.com. On amazon.de it was too expensive. Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 5, 2019 Report Posted July 5, 2019 Treasures has arrived and I'm hoping to listen to it this weekend. Will definitely be getting the new reissue of Elegia as well. Quote
Late Posted November 7, 2019 Report Posted November 7, 2019 Just discovered McNeill, purchased Treasures, and have Washington Suite on the way. Really enjoying the former, especially Cecil McBee's playing. Asha will likely be next. Quote

He also has had outstanding careers as a painter and photographer and professor. Quote

Man, what fine music. I'll be spinning this for a while. Weird that I discovered McNeill before discovering this thread, but it all worked out in the end. Somewhat mystifying that such a talent could be so deep under the radar. Quote

Agreed, though he was/is a true renaissance man, with many talents (art - he studied with Picasso, photography, education) Quote

relyles Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 I never heard of Lloyd McNeill before today. Streaming Treasures right now on Napster. The first track alone is enough to convince me I need to pick up some of his music. Quote
relyles Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 I just ordered Asha, Washington Suite and Treasures. Quote
mjazzg Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 Just flicked back to the start of this thread to see that it's ten years (!!!) since felser's recommendation prompted me to buy the 'Asha' reissue, my introduction to McNeill. How time flies when you're listening to great music. Quote
