jazzbo Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 Right. I have the Japanese cd reisssue, and it is not there. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I've just got the Marion Brown CD in this series , sounds quite interesting, thought about the Pharoah S but the samples dont get me excited , the Shepp sounds very much better. Any opinions re which of the Alice Coltrane CDs to go for first ??. I have nothing by her. What do you think of the sound of this series? My local specialist store has them all at about £5 each and I'm tempted.. Quote

They're very tempting at that price... Quote

They're very tempting at that price... The nearest specialist to me is Broad Street Jazz in Bath (excellent shop by the way). The website has them for £5.99. mikeweil Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 (edited) Anyone considering purchasing The Marion Brown 2 for 1......it is INCOMPLETE.......it leaves out the part 2 of Sweet Earth Flying. CD time constraints. Shit! I ordered it today. Part 2 of Sweet Earth Flying has never been released - it was not on the original LP, although presumably it was recorded. The original liner notes state part 2 was recorded, but not included on the LP. I wonder if the tape still exists ... Edited October 18, 2011 by mikeweil Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I doubt if any original masters exist. Quote

gmonahan Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 The price on a bunch of these seems to have come down to around $7 each from sellers on Amazon. 'Course, that doesn't include shipping. gregmo Quote

Like a dream come true... Quote
Leeway Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Went to order the Marion Brown from Amazon, and they are showing it as "out of stock" That's amazing, albeit frustrating. The resellers have low prices, but they all ship from UK or Germany. Been down that road before. One dealer sent it sack mail; took 6 weeks to arrive. Will have to look around. Anyone have an idea of the print run on these things? Quote

mikeweil Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 The resellers have low prices, but they all ship from UK or Germany. Judging from the production credits, this series seems to be a German i.e. JazzEcho initiative. So maybe they are not manufactured in other countries. Quote
Guy Berger Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 On the Jarrett, my understanding is the version of "Mysteries" on the now-OOP Impulse box cut off the first few seconds of "Rotation". Is this true, and if so, will this new version restore the missing material? Anybody able to answer this question? Is "Rotation" identical to the Impulse box or did they restore the LP version? Quote
jazzbo Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 As far as I can tell from those I have, these all seem to be new masterings, so my guess is that it would be "new". . . which hopefully would be the original version. I'm not going to rebuy this one though for a few seconds. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Several have mentioned upstream in this thread that they bite. Quote
JSngry Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 The John Handy items bite (and painfully), but the Sonny Criss sides....they are very "well done for what they are", Criss plays excellently, very soulfully (did he ever not?) & the arrangements do not get in his way. At times they might even aid him in getting into the material. Recommended, actually, but with the caveat that these should in no way be approached as "straight ahead" jazz, and if you don't like "marketplace jazz" (although one could make the argument that all recorded music is "marketplace music" in some form or fashion...), the stop before you get started. sidewinder Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 Just picked up the Marion Brown 'Geechee Reflections/Sweet Earth Flying'. Excellent sound and great reissue. Quote
Head Man Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 Just picked up the Marion Brown 'Geechee Reflections/Sweet Earth Flying'. Excellent sound and great reissue. I agree. I've had mine for about a week now and it's been on my player for most of that time. The only minor gripe I do have is that the print on the cover reproductions is so small that the original notes are impossible to read. Still, the remastered sound is excellent. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 I can just about read the print of the liner notes but I agree - it is a pain ! Quote
jazzbo Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 I skipped this 2-on-1 because I have excellent sounding Japanese cds of these two, but agree: this is great music, and it's a real shame that neither of these two Marion Brown recordings has been on cd in the States before. Quote
