Larry Kart Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Don't know whether it's just this week or a recent change that I hadn't noticed before, but there is no "Jazz' category in today's Sunday NY Times "The Week Ahead" listings on page 2 of the Arts & Leisure section -- just "Theater," "Film," "Television," Pop," "Dance," "Classical," and "Art." kh1958 Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 The Friday Times still has a fairly complete listing of jazz club appearances/concerts in the week ahead. Quote
brownie Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 This week's listing in the Week in Music section of the Sunday edition of the New York Times website! Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 7, 2011 Author Report Posted August 7, 2011 This week's listing in the Week in Music section of the Sunday edition of the New York Times website! But there is no list of jazz events in the print edition of the Sunday NYT that I get in suburban Chicago, and there used to be one there. Quote
Leeway Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Maybe Ben Ratliff s on vacation. If jazz has indeed been dropped (I can't see that but we'll see in the next few weeks), it is one more blow against the visibility and viability of jazz as both art and entertainment. As a practical matter, hard-core jazz buffs can get the complete schedule from the New York Jazz Review (formerly AAJ Jazz) New York, which has the fullest listing of shows. Plus there are online resources. As a matter of principle, it is important for jazz to b shown and discussed in the NYT and New Yorker. Quote
ValerieB Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 i went into "mourning" quite awhile back when the L.A. Times cut out their jazz listings and ceased to regularly review jazz concerts. New York Magazine also eliminated their jazz concert section. in plain English, it sucks, big-time! Quote
BFrank Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 I don't remember a "jazz" listing in the Sunday Times - it's usually lumped in with "Pop", IIRC. As kh said, it's the Friday paper that has the listings. Quote

BFrank Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 I think we're talking about the NY Times, aren't we? Quote
ValerieB Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 I think we're talking about the NY Times, aren't we? thought so. sorry. Quote

As kh said, it's the Friday paper that has the listings. Right. It's always right behind pop listings in Friday's Weekend Arts (movies and performances). I had the paper last Friday, and I swear I did not notice this. Let's see what happens next week. Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 8, 2011 Author Report Posted August 8, 2011 Sorry -- guess I was wrong. Quote
