Don't know whether it's just this week or a recent change that I hadn't noticed before, but there is no "Jazz' category in today's Sunday NY Times "The Week Ahead" listings on page 2 of the Arts & Leisure section -- just "Theater," "Film," "Television," Pop," "Dance," "Classical," and "Art."

If jazz has indeed been dropped (I can't see that but we'll see in the next few weeks), it is one more blow against the visibility and viability of jazz as both art and entertainment.

As a practical matter, hard-core jazz buffs can get the complete schedule from the New York Jazz Review (formerly AAJ Jazz) New York, which has the fullest listing of shows. Plus there are online resources.

As a matter of principle, it is important for jazz to b shown and discussed in the NYT and New Yorker.

i went into "mourning" quite awhile back when the L.A. Times cut out their jazz listings and ceased to regularly review jazz concerts. New York Magazine also eliminated their jazz concert section.

in plain English, it sucks, big-time!

I don't remember a "jazz" listing in the Sunday Times - it's usually lumped in with "Pop", IIRC.

As kh said, it's the Friday paper that has the listings.

if you're talking about the LAT, there are no Friday jazz listings that i've seen.

Right. It's always right behind pop listings in Friday's Weekend Arts (movies and performances). I had the paper last Friday, and I swear I did not notice this.

Let's see what happens next week.
