Late Posted August 6, 2011 Report Posted August 6, 2011 Opus Kura has been around for more than a decade now, and if you like classical recordings made in the 20's-40's, you owe it to yourself to try at least one disc from this label. Opus Kura website. Their edition of Pablo Casals' Bach Cello Suites is a revelation, and their series of Dinu Lipatti are the best (sonically) I've ever heard. I've also discovered the great conductors Felix Weingartner, Willem Mengelberg, and Václav Talich through this label. An enthusiastic . Anyone here have discs on this label? Which ones? Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 The Casals. I was impressed by the transfers. Best I'd heard of that material. Quote
Late Posted August 9, 2011 Author Report Posted August 9, 2011 Read the reviews on the Casals 2-disc set. Superlative. I own the set and agree. Quote
Late Posted May 13, 2013 Author Report Posted May 13, 2013 I wanted to bump this thread back up to support Opus Kura's excellent transfers of 78 rpm source material to the digital domain. This disc: sports the best-sounding 30's Kreisler I've ever heard (— way better than the old EMI transfer). Significantly, you can hear Rupp's piano with more dynamism. It's not just Kreisler's show; there's actual interplay here (which is something I didn't hear as much on the EMI transfer). I strongly recommend the violinst-centered "Plays Short Pieces" series (— these were some of the first discs Opus Kura put out). Discs by Mischa Elman, Nathan Milstein, Efrem Zimbalist, Joseph Szigeti, Bronislaw Huberman, Jacques Thibaud, and the above-mentioned Kreisler top the bill. If you have an affection for lovingly transferred "historical" recordings (crackly, yes, but also full of life!), please do try this series. (I have no affiliation. I'm just a fan.) The discs rank up there, and often (sonically) surpass, the work from other excellent labels such as Biddulph. Quote
