jazzscot Posted January 10, 2004 Report Posted January 10, 2004 Hope there's a lot of you out there waiting in anticipation for the release of the NEW CD on the 27th January, I am, especially because it features BILL FRISELL. Any comments greatly received!!!!!!!! Quote
Late Posted January 10, 2004 Report Posted January 10, 2004 I'm looking forward to this one, too. The addition of Frisell to Douglas's current working quintet (Chris Potter, Uri Caine, James Genus, Clarence Penn) should make for an interesting album. I really like The Infinite, and have high hopes already! In fact, I already have a ticket for when Douglas makes his way out here (quintet only) in May. Quote
sal Posted January 11, 2004 Report Posted January 11, 2004 I can't wait for this one either. I'll be getting it the day it comes out. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 12, 2004 Report Posted January 12, 2004 I've generally been disappointed with Dave Douglas' albums. Especially when listening to them after a MASADA disc. I wish he'd play with that fire on his own dates. Quote

jazzypaul Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 I'm sorry, but The Infinite was a damn cool record. Freak In left me a little cold, but from what I'm hearing of the new side, it's definitely an interesting record. Frisell's presence shapes this record, and it does go into some uncharted territory (for Frisell and Douglas). It's not as adventuresome as Freak In, it's not as fiery as the live Masada discs, and it's not as immediately accesible as The Infinite, but it's most certainly a cool little disc, upon first and second listenings. Muskrat Ramble Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 I absolutely love The Infinite (though I'm not so keen on Freak In), so I can't wait for the new album. Quote
robviti Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 (edited) has there been no subsequent discussion of this disc? that's hard to believe! personally, i was going to skip this one, but after listening to a review on npr last month, it made its way onto my want list. i finally got it 2 days ago and i like it quite a bit. i think douglas has matured a lot over the past few years. his playing seems more focused and he makes better use of space in his solos these days. i also like the significance of the title strange liberation, but that's an added bonus that some others might not appreciate. robviti Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 well, i did a search of some other forums, and there has been some talk about this disc. i'll let my comment stand though, cause i'm too lazy to delete! Quote
sal Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 I like the disc very much as well. I've listened to it many times since its release, and I think it holds up as one of his best releases. Frisell adds alot to the music...almost "decorates" it in a way. This is one of the best new releases of the year so far. Quote
Late Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 Strange that this one: hasn't received any remarks here. Check out the sound samples. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 It's been reviewed in a few spots such as OFN (very positively, by Jay Collins). It's OK but I thought it something of a potboiler, though a pleasant one. I still haven't heard Strange Liberation though. I hated The Invisible sufficiently that I'm leery of anything by the same (more or less) band..... Douglas playes with plenty of fire on his own records, assuming you've got the right records. Try Witness or that sextet disc on New World whose name's escaping me at the moment... Quote

I hated The Invisible sufficiently that I'm leery of anything by the same (more or less) band ... Do you mean The Infinite? If you didn't like that record, you probably won't like Strange Liberation, which, actually, I don't think holds up as well as The Infinite. In general, the first respective album put out by one of Douglas's "bands" seems, at least for me, to often be the best by that band. Charms of the Night Sky, The Tiny Bell Trio, The Quartet, etc. All of their "first" albums are my favorites in the bunch. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 Yes The Infinite--I keep getting mixed up because of the Ornette tune & because I haven't got the disc anymore. I just remembered the name of the sextet disc, though! In Our Lifetime. It's excellent. Tributes to Booker Little & Tim Berne on it, & that info conveys something of the flavour of the disc too, I think. Quote
.:.impossible Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 I guess I'll have to give The Infinte another listen soon. I don't remember it being near as good as you guys say it is. It might just boil down to taste though, I suppose. Quote
