Brad Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 I guess I now see it as a son preserving his father's legacy, something he's been doing for a few years now. Maybe the tone of the conversation turned a little sour, but the underlying message is still the same: the music of Woody Shaw II is being treated with respect and will hopefully reach new listeners at the same time as it is enjoyed by those of us have heard it before. Good luck shawoody. :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup Ditto. Let's hope all children have this regard for their parents. I think it's more than simple financial interest. Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 Geez! He tried to give a "heads up" and gets all this grief. Say thanks and wait for details. Following Chuck's advice: Thanks. Look forward to hearing more in the early fall Well, the guy's just flogging his stuff. Does the board get a cut? It's fine and we see it here often, but let's not pretend it's anything other than it is. I agree. The fact that he's Shaw's son doesn't change anything as far as I'm concerned. Quote
bertrand Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 I'm a bit lost on this thread. If I understand correctly, it should include: 1) All of United 2) All of Woody III 3) All of For Sure!, including the bonus track that was incomprehensibly left off the Wounded Bird reissue 4) Everything that was on the Steppin' Stones CD + 'It All Comes Back To You' 5) Other, never-before released material from the Steppin' Stones sessions. I assume it will be a big box only, no individual CD reissues. If I want the tracks I don't already have from the Wounded Bird and Steppin' Stones CDs, will I at least be able to buy them as downloads? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
Tjazz Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Great. Maybe Sony will do a complete JJ Johnson on Columbia too. Quote
mracz Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 I listened to my LP of Woody III over the weekend for the first time in a while, and was yet again impressed/moved by the music, especially the contrast between the very considered suite on the first side and the more free-blowing tracks on the second side (ending with the amazing Escape Velocity from the Village Vanguard, which does, indeed, achieve lift-off!). I know this is a little off-post here, but in Amiri Baraka's liner notes on the inner sleeve, he mentions Buddy Terry as one of the musicians from Newark deserving of greater recognition, and cross-referencing with the on-line Woody Shaw discography, I note that Woody appears on a couple of Buddy Terry sessions. Are these worth tracking down for Woody's contributions? Quote

felser Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Yes, definitely. The Buddy Terry Mainstrean albums are pretty wonderful. Quote
JSngry Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Indeed they are. The one to hunt down first, though, imo, is this one on Prestige: There's a long-ish (12:35) cut on Side Two called "The Revealing Time" that's a quartet of Terry, Shaw, Larry Young, & Eddie Gladden. The result is like what Unity would have been if it had been an all-Newark album. Local band of local heavies just stretching out like they would in a local club. Pretty damn fine, it is. Quote
Head Man Posted August 15, 2011 Author Report Posted August 15, 2011 Yes, definitely. The Buddy Terry Mainstrean albums are pretty wonderful. I'm surprised. Admittedly I've only heard one (Lean On Him) but that one was pretty dispensable. Quote
Free For All Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Yes, definitely. The Buddy Terry Mainstrean albums are pretty wonderful. I'm surprised. Admittedly I've only heard one (Lean On Him) but that one was pretty dispensable. In addition to the Prestige title Jim mentioned, I'd recommend Pure Dynamite (which has Woody Shaw) and Awareness, which by the way are both available as mp3s at Amazon for CHEAP. Quote
JSngry Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Yeah, but otoh you got one called Pure Dynamite that's got Woody, Eddie Henderson, Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, and several other names of note and regard. A date with an "eartly 70s modern" tone to it (i.e. - Rhodes, Latin percussions, etc) that's well worth checking out. And both of his Prestige dates are not without some notable moments. Terry's the kind of guy who was usually the "weakest" player on his own albums, a lot like Houston Person of the time, but also like Person, you cna hear that there's a work in progress going on, that he's not just coasting on having a leader date and is going to be content doing what's on display and nothing else. The guy had that palpable "local player working on some deeper shit" vibe going on with all those albums, and I kinda dig that, especially the re-casting of Unity as local jam session. That move was waaaaaay cool!OOPS! didn't read the second page before posting! My bad. Quote

Admittedly I've only heard one (Lean On Him) but that one was pretty dispensable. 'Lean on Him' is a bad misfire, but the other two are incredible. 'Pure Dynamite', as pointed out by Free For All and Jim, and 'Awareness' are early 70's gems. Here's the allmusic.com description to 'Awareness" (sounds like a Dustygroove blurb) "Awareness teams Buddy Terry with an all-star cast including trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, pianist Stanley Cowell and percussionist Mtume to forge a far-reaching, audaciously free spiritual jazz suite far removed from the signature Mainstream label aesthetic. Terry moves from soprano to tenor to flute and back again, exemplifying the soul-searching restlessness of his music--at the same time, the individual players fuse seamlessly, channeling the righteous fury of Terry's vision to create a coherent, deeply righteous whole." mracz Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 Thanks for the recommendations. I'll download the Mainstream albums, and keep my eyes open for Natural Soul, which looks like very rara avis (there's a $50 copy on ebay at the moment, which is more than I'm usually willing to pay for ANY LP, and there doesn't seem to have been any CD issue at all, ever). Woody plus Larry Young; why did I never notice this one!!! Quote

Ted O'Reilly Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 The Woody Shaw set seems to be available from Pop Market. Any feedback yet? F I've ordered it (and the Dexter Gordon). Just have to wait (and wait, and wait, and ...) for delivery, USA to Canada. Post Office(s) I assume, so I must learn to be patient. Quote
Eric Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 The Woody Shaw set seems to be available from Pop Market. Any feedback yet? F I've got it and aside from a couple snippets of the unreleased Vanguard material, I have not listened to it. I will say that the booklet sets a new low for being incredibly hard to read - tiny font and often set against a background that essentially makes it disappear. Or maybe I am just getting old. Quote

Hm, doesn't sound too great... as I have the Mosaic and both the CD and LP of "Setting Stones", I'm really only interested in the unreleased Vanguard material. Would you be so kind and post some details about it? Quote
