Aggie87 Posted January 16, 2012 Author Report Posted January 16, 2012 I think the Giants may be the best overall team left in the playoffs. The Pats may have the best overall offense, but not as good a defense. I think the Giants beat the Niners and the Pats beat the Ravens next wknd. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Because I intensely despise their QB and the franchise in general and I couldn't give a fuck who their fans might root for in other sports. Here's a clue why I might hate those fuckers: Quote
Tim McG Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 I'm amazed that the Iggles are still alive. If they beat Dallas and Washington and the Giants lose to the Jets and then beat Dallas for the finale, all three teams are 8-8 and the Iggles get the division crown on tiebreakers. I'm a disgusted Giants fan, so this scenario sound like fun to me, especially if the Iggles get hot and maybe run the table, an 8-8 team hoisting the trophy. Take that, Goodell!!! We shall see. Both NY and the Niners are hitting on all eight cylinders right now. Should be a good game. Quote
JSngry Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Can we have a Green Bay/New Orleans showdown this weekend anyway, maybe as a fundraiser/charity game? I'd be more interested in that than any of the remaining games... Quote
Noj Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 (edited) Anybody but the Pats win, please. Preferably the 49ers. (Apologies to Conn and The GHF) Edited January 16, 2012 by Noj Quote
Shawn Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 go NINERS! I literally HATE the Giants, there is no other team I would rather see get a beat down. Quote

The Pats may have the best overall offense, but not as good a defense. I think the Giants beat the Niners and the Pats beat the Ravens next wknd. Best? Hm. Niners are the #1 rated defense in the league. I'll concede QBs; Manning far out shines Smith. No doubt. But he will have a tough time against the Niner LBs and DBs. I was at their regular season game and it was a battle. Niners have a better running game, too. Receivers: I'd give the edge to the Giants, but not by much. Special teams: Niners, hands down the best of the two teams. Akers and Lee are phenomenal. Anything can happen and to be honest I never thought my guys would get this far. Personally? I'm hoping for a HarBowl Super Bowl....with a different result, of course Anybody but the Pats win, please. Preferably the 49ers. (Apologies to Conn and The GHF) That will be a tough one in our house. My wife is a die-hard Patriots fan and I'm a die-hard Niners fan. We will probably have to sit at opposite ends of the room if it's Pats vs Niners in the Super Bowl Quote
GA Russell Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 Every year I hope that the Super Bowl is a 1959 NFL team against a 1963 AFL team. Quote
Brad Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 It's supposed to rain all week in SF and therefore a muddy field. Who does this favor? Quote
Shawn Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 (edited) It's supposed to rain all week in SF and therefore a muddy field. Who does this favor? Theoretically the team with the best running game, therefore San Fran. Edited January 18, 2012 by Shawn Quote
Noj Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 The tale of the tape in the regular season game between the Giants and Niners doesn't leave much to work with. The team that won (SF) was the team which forced one more turnover. Otherwise, NY threw for more yards, rushed for more yards, converted on 4th down twice... It's a coin flip. Both defenses are stellar. The Niners' secondary looked awesome to me for much of the game against the Saints, but still had mental lapses and poor tackling in the 4th quarter. The Giants' defense sort of shut down the Packers, but with all the dropped balls by GB receivers it makes it tough to judge. Whichever team turns the ball over more will lose, which may boil down to whichever QB makes poor decisions or whichever RB has butterfingers, or special teams errors...? Quote
JETman Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 It's supposed to rain all week in SF and therefore a muddy field. Who does this favor? Theoretically the team with the best running game, therefore San Fran. I believe the opposite is true. Don Shula shut down Freeman McNeil in 1982 by ordering that the field at the Orange Bowl be saturated prior to game time. The Fish ended up winning that AFC Championship Game 14-0 over the Jets. Quote
JSngry Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I remember the 1995(?) NFC title game between the Cowboys & 49ers in SF, on a Sunday after a similarly lengthy rain. The field was a swamp, and the Cowboys went down 21-0 off of turnover in, like, the first 7 minutes or so, a hole out of from which there was no getting. Quote
Tim McG Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 It's supposed to rain all week in SF and therefore a muddy field. Who does this favor? Niners. The feild gets soggy when the tide comes in, too. Giants play on turf. TBH, none of that will matter come game time. The tale of the tape in the regular season game between the Giants and Niners doesn't leave much to work with. The team that won (SF) was the team which forced one more turnover. Dan Gould Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 Theoretically but a super muddy field can kind of mess up a superior pass defense like the one the Niners have, or just make things more random because DBs who are great at coverage may slip, and so may really good receivers. I think the running game advantage depends on whether conditions change the offensive game plans. Quote
JSngry Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 Proper cleat selection is critical. That's something not to take for granted. Quote
Tim McG Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) We may see more dropped balls if it is raining, too. I remember that same Niners vs C'boys in the NFC Championship in a mud bowl. Jerry Jones whined to the NFL how unfair it was to his players and that the game should have been moved to Dallas. The NFL Commissioner reminded Jones that the Niners played in that same mud. Jones shut up about it after that. Edited January 19, 2012 by GoodSpeak Quote
Brad Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 If soggy weather favors a good running game, the obvious advantage goes to the Niners because the Giants can't run the ball even in good weather. Quote

If soggy weather favors a good running game, the obvious advantage goes to the Niners because the Giants can't run the ball even in good weather. Good point. But Manning will find his targets more often than Smith...and that's what worries me. Quote
JETman Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 If soggy weather favors a good running game, the obvious advantage goes to the Niners because the Giants can't run the ball even in good weather. Did I miss something? Have we established that soggy weather favors a good running game? You're a Jets fan; I'm sure you remember the game I referenced above. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 If soggy weather favors a good running game, the obvious advantage goes to the Niners because the Giants can't run the ball even in good weather. That was true in the regular season, but the Giants have run well in the playoffs. Of course I'm biased as a Giant fan, but I like thier chances. To me, both defensive teams are excellent, but the Giant offense is much better than the 49ers offense. Weather and other factors can change things in a hurry, though. Quote
GA Russell Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Vice-President Biden went to a fundraiser in San Francisco yesterday, and predicted that the Giants would win! When everyone laughed and booed, he said that he was thinking about the San Francisco Giants. Quote
