I got a good laugh with Mike Brown of the Bengals talking about Carson Palmer's trade request, blathering on about how Palmer's made a commitment for 4 years. The Bengals can cut Palmer at anytime, so where's their commitment?

On the other hand, Brown gets to choose between allowing Palmer to retire, or getting something in return for him. I think that Palmer is overrated, but that would work in the Bengals' favor. Having finished last in the division, they could use the pick(s) or player(s). However, with other teams rapidly snapping up quarterbacks, the market for Palmer's services is dwindling.

So Brown has a player who doesn't want to be there, a frenzied market where almost any QB is getting snapped up, and he...shoots himself in the foot by being a hardass and gets nothing for Palmer.

There's a reason why the Bengals were recently voted the worst professional sports franchise.

Elsewhere on the quarterback front, I'm interested to see where Orton ends up. He is the Rodney Dangerfield of starting quarterbacks. I would love to see the Browns pick up Orton or Vince Young as an insurance policy for Colt McCoy. Vince Young can be a basketcase, but he wins games. If he goes to the Eagles as rumored, he'll have a good chance to play given Vick's injury history.

Appears the Nnamdi saga is down to either the Jets or the Cowboys. He's a great player, but also pricey. Will be curious to see where he ends up.

Patriots cut Ty Warren today, supposedly due to him not being in shape after being in IR last year. Like to see him in a Cowboys uniform if he's still able to play. He was a solid lineman in NE.

Vince Young signed with the Eagles, to back up Vick. If Vick gets injured, watch out Eagles! Not sure you want Young in charge. The Eagles also signed free agent QB Jerrod Johnson, who had a poor senior season at A&M last year. If his arm returns to it's previous form, he's worth developing. Big guy, had a cannon, smart, and a team player.

Well, the Pats are making it interesting with deals for Ochocinco and Haynesworth. In the old days, I'd have expected Conn to chime in on such transactions...

Conn told me he's fine with both players, as role players. Neither are expected to carry the team. He's probably right, given Belichick's ability to plug players in left and right and not skip a beat.

I think Haynesworth will be grumbling before long, myself. For some reason or nother.

I'm probably just a dumb-ass, but it's hard for me to imagine the J-E-T-S signing Asomugha. A huge part of the payroll would then be devoted to the cornerback position (with him and Revis).

I'm inclined to agree re. Haynesworth.

Asomugha is an Eagle!!!!!

Well, to say I'm stunned would be an understatement. If this turns out to be true and, as is being reported, and the Eagles also bring in Vince Young as a back-up to Mike Vick, then this will be the most memorable of off-seasons. Question now is, what are they going to do with three all-pro CB's? Wonder if they plan to deal one for either a linebacker or a D-lineman.

Dave, I've got to think that Samuel is gone. He hasn't reported to training camp(excused absence) and I'm wondering if the Eagles decided that they were overpaying for his services. Like you, I would like to see them get a LB or D lineman.

There's quite a bit of talk about Casey Matthews getting a shot at MLB. Having watched this kid at the University of Oregon for the last four years, I'm all for it. He's not as big as he needs to be, but he's a natural leader and he's got a motor in him that just won't quit. I agree that of the three CB's, Samuel is the one most likely to go. Tackling issues are a real bugaboo. I didn't know he wasn't at camp. That may say as much as anything. Still gotta make DeSean happy though.

Wow, that was out of left field! I thought the Eagles were set with DRC and Samuel. Guess not.

Cowboys still have a suspect secondary - I wonder if they'd be interested in Samuel, if he is indeed available. And if the Eagles would trade within their division. I guess they traded McNabb to the 'skins, so anything's possible.

I have a hard time seeing Philly moving Samuel to Dallas. Not only would that be an intra-divisional move that involves the hated Cowboys, but I'm not sure they have anyone the Birds really need. Even from a draft-pick perspective, they'll finish high enough to make that a less attractive option. What I'd really like to see is a play for a top flight RT to protect Michael Vick's backside. Winston Justice is in way over his head (not to mention that he's now on the PUP list) so the need is definitely there. If not, then the aforementioned linebacker or defensive lineman. Or, you could make the deal for picks and use the "extra" cash to help make DeSean Jackson a happier camper.

I've been an Eagle fan since 1959. To see them go all in and effectively create their own 2-3 year Super Bowl window is as exciting as it gets. I am wound up tighter than a 10 day clock. Let's get it started. Philly plays in Seattle in December. I'm thinking I may need to get up there and check this out in person.

Oh, also, lost in the Asomugha ozone, Philadelphia did confirm earlier this evening that they've added Vince Young. Working with Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg might do wonders for his career.

  • 3 weeks later...

...in other Cryptkeeper news, the Raiders picked up Terrell Pryor in the 3rd round of today's supplemental draft.

Wonder if they think he's gonna turn into an NFL caliber QB, or they try to make him a WR.

Whatever course the Raiduhs elect, you can pretty much count on them messing it up.

[Added] Not looking good for my NY football Giants. They pretty much stayed out of the free-agent derby, are being hit hard by the injury bug, and there's possible dissension (Umenyiora).

what if michael vick were white? espn doesn't do journalism or editorials. it is in the production and advertising industry.

some react strongly to the following as if it were groundbreaking journalism. stating the obvious is hardly journalism.

Wow, that is pretty juvenile. It reminds me of the old Marvel Comics title "What If?" where one-off stories like "What If Spiderman married the Black Widow" or "What if Thor were a Unitarian from Mars?"... that kind of thing.

Just because one tries to ruminate philosophically on a vapid premise, doesn't make the premise any less vapid, nor does it give intellectual credibility to the author.

And by the way, can we please stop referring to Vick's return as heroic? Most heroes don't have agents waiting for them outside prison gates with six figure offers in hand. It's no different than a former CFO imprisoned for embezzlement coming out of prison and getting another comfy office with a salary and a window view or a CEO whose company was found guilty of fraud becoming governor of Florida.

I feel bad for the former drug addicts who went into prison with nothing and have nothing waiting for them when they get out. And if they make something of themselves, build a new life, hey, then maybe we can start visiting the idea of using the word 'heroic'. But that's just what I think.

EDIT: Whoops, sorry, I forgot I was on the NFL thread. I don't mean to derail from that, and if a moderator feels like I've hijacked the thread, you have my blessing to do with my post as you see fit.

Cheers.
