kinuta Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Saw Captain America and was seriously underwhelmed. Tired, lame, seen it been there waste of time. Nothing comes close to the two Batmans, they are in a class of their own. Sorry, Shawn and it's other admirers, nothing personal. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 I can dig it too. I really enjoyed the movie, but can see why someone wouldn't. I mean it's Captain America. Been around nearly seventy years. Created in a different time. I thought the tone was just right myself, but if the tone weren't just right for someone, I think it would be a bore. Quote
kinuta Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Rise Of The Planet Of the Apes - Rupert Wyatt (2011) Spartacus ! I knew the film had overwhelmed my doubts when I started rooting for the chimps. I could criticize the casting but the humans hardly matter, it's all about the apes. Well done, a great popcorn movie and when is the sequel coming out ? Quote
Shawn Posted August 16, 2011 Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 Thanks for the recommendation. I was concerned with the all-CGI characters, I still have issues with that technology, I prefer physical effects and prosthetic makeup. Quote
king ubu Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 We've got the whole lot of the previous ape-films on our hd recorder now... will spend a fun night drinking beer, eating crap and watching those Quote
Shawn Posted August 28, 2011 Author Report Posted August 28, 2011 CONAN Quite simply the WORST movie of the year, easily. If they gave awards for inept film editing this one would win the grand prize. I don't think there was a single sequence that actually worked the way it should have. AWFUL. Quote
thedwork Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) just got through watching this series over the last few weeks: i must say i've been enjoying it quite a bit. but i can't make up my mind whether i see it as a "guilty pleasure" or a great series nearly on the level of The Sopranos and the like... either way, it's compulsively watchable (imagine popcorn eating emoticon here). Shawn Posted August 30, 2011 Author Report Posted August 30, 2011 I need to give that show another shot. I tried it awhile back but really wasn't in the right frame of mind for it. I might enjoy it more now. Quote

I might enjoy it more now. you probably already know to do this, but if you do go back and check it out again definitely start from the beginning. it's very 'serial' and the direction is in no way dumbed down. in other words, if you don't know characters' backstory (and there's plenty all 'round), you'll be missing out. thedwork Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 (edited) if you're in the mood for an over-the-top, kitsch, campy, horror/comedy, i'd say you could do a lot worse. i enjoyed this thoroughly. i went to see this mainly on the strength of toni collette (love her!!!). i wish there was more of her in this but i take what i can get. and say what you want about farrell, but if you've seen In Bruges (as well as others) you know he's a terrific actor and he had a good time slummin' it up in this B-Movie style horror-fest. and you gotta admit those eyebrows suit the vampire character perfectly. no need to hire an expert eyebrow make-up guy! hilariously cliched good times... That's the 'Fright Night' remake, right? I saw the original (recommended) and was hoping this one would be good. Quote
Shawn Posted September 19, 2011 Author Report Posted September 19, 2011 Very funny and surprisingly honest film, recommended. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 I agree. Very funny, well-made movie. Quote
Shawn Posted September 21, 2011 Author Report Posted September 21, 2011 Anybody see Drive yet? I definitely am interested in checking that out. The remake of "The Killer Elite" looks entertaining as well. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 I'll be seeing Drive soon. Looking forward to "Ides of March" next month as well. Quote
BillF Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 Anybody see Drive yet? Drive released here on Friday. Will be there. Quote

I saw the original (recommended) and was hoping this one would be good. I hate remakes of favorites. I feel much the same way. If a certain film was particularly satisfying to me, then the very idea of a remake nauseates me. I'm also looking forward to "Ides of March," Jazzbo. Gosling suddenly seems to be ubiquitous. Shawn Posted September 25, 2011 Author Report Posted September 25, 2011 X-Men First Class - Very enjoyable film, total popcorn movie. The relationship between Xavier and Rose Byrne's character should have been explored further...and they could have lessened the plot thread about the serum to make themselves appear normal. But all in all I liked it. Quote

BruceH Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 I find it hard to get around that loud 80's-type music though. Quote
mikelz777 Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 (edited) I can easily recommend Moneyball, particularly if you are a baseball fan. It's a very well done look at the inside workings of baseball. Jonah Hill did a great job and I almost missed Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Very enjoyable. Edited September 29, 2011 by mikelz777 Quote
