Teasing the Korean Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 The iPod has rendered the "desert island disc" concept obsolete, hasn't it? I would just say "I'd bring my iPod," which has far more than ten albums. Quote
papsrus Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 (edited) And a satellite disc, wireless modem, solar panel power system, spear, knife, fishing line, some flint and someone to dance with. ... And, what the heck, an iPad, too. Edited July 19, 2011 by papsrus Quote
Face of the Bass Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Yes, because the idea that you would be stranded on a desert island with a cd player and speaker system that plugged into an electrical outlet was just far more realistic. Quote
Leeway Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Did anyone ever take the phrase literally? I hope not. It's only mean to suggest which 10 or 12 records you would want with you if you knew you would be listening to them for a long time. A good question to sharpen one's thinking and evaluative facility. Whenever discussion turns to the relative merits of a musician, I always like to ask, what desert island disk did he or she create? A good way to narrow the field considerably. Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 I always thought a desert island disc was chosen on cover art and/or liner notes. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 A few years ago a truck backed up to my door and unloaded "The Complete Works" on the Vox label. I think it cost $33 then. I have been loading it into the ipod for months. Quote
crisp Posted July 24, 2011 Report Posted July 24, 2011 I think it still works; the show is called Desert Island Discs, not Desert Island Downloads. Has anyone yet chosen an iPod as their luxury object? They could fill it with the 544 old episodes available here. Quote

Amazed the BBC has kept so much! Their usual practice is to tape over/delete etc in order to make room for the latest Ant & Dec show. Sadly, they don't have the Sue Lawley programme with John Lee Hooker. Sue (in best BBC accent): "Now, in 19?? you had a hit with Boo-gee Chill-un..." Some of his choices would not please the Blues Puritans: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/34917e58#p0093pgz Gosh...you can even search on choices. Vic Reeves chose Henry Cow in 2003! And here's a study in 'artist' vanity: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/51ed3e16#p009y865 Not to be confused with: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/03573d56#p0093xhc Edited July 24, 2011 by A Lark Ascending Quote
crisp Posted July 24, 2011 Report Posted July 24, 2011 Well if it's vanity you're after: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/5c298a43#p009y1rb Or maybe he missed the point. In any case it's disappointing. Quote
