Stereojack Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 A new release in August from Hip-o Select, spotted here. Seems to be an expanded edition of this 1956 album. Unreleased material aplenty perhaps? I've owned this LP for many years. The high point for me has always been the Ella & Louis stuff. Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 I somehow seemed to have missed this one, though some of the tracks look familiar. Might some of them have been used on compilations or sampler-type issues? Given that it's a pricey Hip-O, I might wait until it's available on a Bargain Day somewhere online... Quote

ejp626 Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 (edited) Track listing from here: Disc 1 All tracks originally released in different order as Verve MGV-8231-2, 1956 except Disc 2, Tracks 3-13, which are previously unreleased. I was only marginally interested in this, but almost a whole CD of unreleased Louis Armstrong (and a bit o' Ella) makes it far more tempting. I'll ponder this for a while. The price is definitely on the high side, however, even for 2 CDs -- $36! Edited July 26, 2011 by ejp626 Quote
medjuck Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Is "his orchestra" with Pops the usual '50s line-up? It sounds like an interesting set of songs? Quote
tranemonk Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 I'll skip this one... The whole Hip-O line is WAY overpriced. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 (edited) The released material is great. I bet the unreleased is excellent as well. As for the price. . . I think that it's not that bad for a Hip-O set. It may pay to watch and wait a bit to see if there's a cheaper source. I mean you can get two freshly-released pop cds for that price and get only 1 percent of the value. Edited July 26, 2011 by jazzbo Quote
king ubu Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Very nice! The Pops part will be on the upcoming totally superfluous Universal 10CD set... I already wondered about where the rest of it could be found... and with the Pops being in there, too, that's nice! I'll grab this for sure! Quote
tjluke68 Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 I pre-ordered my copy from blowitouttahere.com (or something like that) for about $10 less than the Hip-O MSRP. Quote
tjluke68 Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Received it in the mail today and listening to Disc 1 now; sounds good but noticed some distortion on the Art Tatum tracks however my laptop doesn't have the best speakers (obviously)... Quote

Just recently got both this and the Ella in Japan (same sort of packaging) in disgusting local stores for rather good prizes, too, but that beats it slightly! Haven't started listening yet, but the packages look very nice! Quote
