Peter Clayton was also my first radio guide into jazz via JRR and the late-night Sunday spot.

In the 80s he did a non-jazz Saturday morning programme on Radio 2 that used to veer all over the shop. One minute you'd have Love doing 'Alone Again Or', then Ella, then The Carpenters.

i seem to recall that 80s show focussed more on middle of the road stuff such as Sinatra; only caught it once or twice.

Alan Dell's 'Big Band Sound' back in the 70s just before Humph was pretty good too. Monday night was jazz night - nice !

That's right - but Clayton's MOR included a lot of 'beyond the obvious' 60s/70s rock. It stood out from the shows more tailored to very specific tastes.

Thanks, ordered a bunch (the same one by Garrick, the Morrisey and two Dankworth doubles) ... and added the Maupin one that's not on sale. Wanted that one for a while.

Have not heard back and not yet received anything ... is that normal with Vocalion? It's been a few years since I last ordered, but the automated email I got, two weeks back, said they would get in touch asap ... and obviously they didn't.

And yeah, I wand that Maupin! :)

Normally when I order I get a confirmation email then the package duly arrives. They don't email to say they are "getting in touch". Perhaps give them a call.

Thanks - I have ordered a few times and never had any problems. Off for a week of vacation tomorrow, will see if anything arrives in the meantime. If not, I'll deal with it afterwards.

yup, but I was away for a week ... and then back in the office, so instead of having an overflowing mailbox (and then maybe having to pick up some stuff again myself due to that) and not being home to receive tracked/signed mail ... I picked the option to go and fetch the stuff myself, was more convenient in this case :)

Thanks for the alert - ordered some classical for a pound a pop (making the standard shipping seem out of proportion, but hey, I'm not complaining!) - they seem to pretty much know which ones not to give away for nothing (i.e. the Busch/Beethoven discs), but clicking through the hits, I really wondered how long this label will still survive, as most of the hits looked like cozy "musique d'ameublement" for a generation that has just about died out completely by now ...

Same people who are splurging on Mantovani and Frank Chacksfield !

Bought a batch - the BBC Jazz Club transcriptions look intriguing and also bought a bundle of Surmans and Garricks to fill in digital gaps for those ones where I have Deram/Argo LPs. Have also taken a punt on the Annie Ross, Alan Clare and Archie Semple.

The Annie Ross disc is real cheap now, so I ordered a copy plus the Bennie Maupin.

Would be interested to hear what you think of it. What an eclectic disk ! Bonfa, Randy Newman, Simone Signoret vegetable tribute (!) and .... King Crimson ! Must have been good fun to hear in person at the Hampstead Theatre and a fine band with Dave McRae and Rick Laird. This one really emphasises the all round versatile performer side of Annie Ross.

Does anyone have both the BGO and Vocalion versions of The Heart Is A Lotus or Black Marigolds?  Trying to decide about whether to get these from Vocalion or save a few bucks and just get the two-fer from BGO.  Any impressions would be much appreciated.  The other BGOs I have (Carr, Wheeler, etc) sound fine.
