I'm interested in both.. since A) I've only got Captain Marvel in the Getz box... and B) I'm going to see the new incarnation of RTF next month...

Got a couple of questions for you though...

A) the RTF box says the live set is 3 CDs... I picked up a 2CD live set a month ago. This one.... http://www.allmusic.com/album/r164142. Anyone got any idea if the track listing is the same? Did they just spread the same stuff over three CDs? Or are there previously unreleased tracks?

B) On the Getz set.. Is the rest of the set similar to Captain Marvel? Thanks...

Any one getting these sets?? Prices are not great but.....

From the link you provided it looks like only the 'Captain Marvel' disc has the same lineup- the rest are just what Getz recorded for Columbia.

The live RTF is from 1977, and has Gayle Moran on some vocals IIRC. It's an expanded version of the LP release from around then. From the link: [The ultimate RTF statement was the 1977 4LP box Return To Forever Live. This version is the first time that the entire concert has been released on CD in the U.S. Unavailable for some 20 years the complete 2 and 1/2 hour concert is heard here remastered by multi Grammy-winning engineer Mark Wilder]

The Getz set was mentioned in the box bargains thread. Much cheaper here. I've got it and really like it even though it's not from a vintage period for Getz.

Captain Marvel isn't typical as the albums vary widely in style. The Best Of Two Worlds is a decent bossa nova set; The Peacocks is really a Jimmy Rowles album and quite uneven, but pretty good; Another World and Forest Eyes are interesting (and very 1970s if you know what I mean) orchestral albums, the former especially nice for what it is; Children of the World is a pop album with Lalo Schiffrin and the only duffer. The revelation in the set is The Master, a terrific quartet album with Albert Dailey, Clint Houston and Billy Hart playing lengthy versions of four standards -- it's brilliant and although it was taped in the studio it sounds a lot like it was recorded in concert, it's that fiery and spontaneous.

The packaging of my copy is quite different from the one in your pic -- it's a longbox with the discs held in place by little plastic hinges. Rattlers are guaranteed.

The Getz set sold in the US contains an extra disc not included in the European set linked above. The question for me then becomes: is the extra disc worth the $20 or so additional cost of ordering through Popmarket (using a 15% off coupon code) vs. Amazon France?

Edited to add that the RTF set has a 3 disc Live set that seems to include some tracks not included here:
