Au contraire, mon frere. It is extremely simple to find region free DVD players (or do the simple hacking that makes most players region free) and also most players and TVs can handle PAL vs. NTSC conversion. I suppose maybe it would look funny on a hi-def TV, but on my set-up it looks fine. I would guess about 15% of my DVD collection is Region 2 with a tiny number of region 5s thrown in as well.

Last week I bought a new BR player and HDTV. I guess I'm going to ask the guys from the site GA Russell provided if they can modify my unit. Would be great. I know it's doable.

Unreal. This set has only been out for about two and a half years, and it was list priced at $120 when it was released. I got it at a pretty decent discount, but I still paid a hell of a lot more than $16.99. Anyway, if you're even a casual fan of the series or of TV Westerns, you should jump on it - it's a really nice set and beats all of the previous releases hands down.

Here's a question for you:

An hour's worth of a color movie has more bits of data than an hour of a black and white movie, right?

So, can more hours of black and white fit onto one side of a DVD than color?

No. It doesn't relate in the same way audio does (mono vs. stereo). Takes up identical space (video+audio).

I'm not sure that an hour's worth of color move has more bits of data than an hour of a black and white movie, as far as transferring to digital is concerned.

Really it depends on the bitrate that is used in the mastering. I've seen 2 hour movies in B & W as well as color squeezed onto one side of a DVD, but it is more typical that either type will take up 75% or so of both layers (most DVDs being dual-layered). It is true that older source material that hasn't been painstakingly restored (and which would generally be b & w) is more likely to be encoded at a lower bitrate.

I stopped in the f.y.e store in the Mall Of America and picked up The Ultimate Oliver Stone Collection on sale for $14.99 !! It's a 14-disc set containing the following movies: Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth, The Doors, Wall Street, Any Given Sunday, Natural Born Killers, U-Turn, Talk Radio, JFK, Nixon, Salvador and the documentary, Oliver Stone's America. There's also a bonus disc containing Looking For Fidel, Persona Non Grata and On The Set Of "Alexander". The clerk there even commented, "That's a nice bargain! It would have even been a bargain at the originally marked price of $29.99."

14 DVDs for $7. What an insane bargain. However, looking at the details, you only get a small taste of The Prisoner (3 episodes out of 17). They seem to have included the entire first season of The Persuaders (a little hard to tell), and it is probably worth $7 for that.

Also, the first 15 episodes of The Champions, which equals "Set 1".

I don't really need any more large DVD sets, but this is kind of tempting, mostly to see Roger Moore and Tony Curtis together. What an odd pairing (in The Persuaders).

$4.99 for the 4 hour Peter Bogdanovich directed Tom Petty documentary Runnin' Down A Dream which comprises 2 DVDs. Also an additional DVD of a 2006 concert, plus a CD with 9 songs mostly from the late '70s to early '80s. Available at Best Buy.

Great documentary. I was thrilled when I got the package for $25 when it came out, let alone $5.
