medjuck Posted January 20, 2015 Report Posted January 20, 2015 Not a box, but Mel Brooks fans might be interested. Spaceballs (Prime) - $1.99 http://www.amazon.com/Spaceballs-Mel-Brooks/dp/0792844890?SubscriptionId=AKIAJ7T5BOVUVRD2EFYQ&tag=camelhomepopular-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=0792844890 Spaceballs is one of my favorite stupid movies (high praise from me). I still LOL at some of the lines: "Yogurt! I HATE yogurt!" "I'm a mog - half-man and half-dog. I'm my own best friend." "What's the combination? OK, I'll tell you: 1.......2.......3.......4.......5." Rick Moranis said that at one time they were planning to do a sequel called "Spaceballs III: the Search for Spaceballs II". Quote
Dave Garrett Posted January 21, 2015 Report Posted January 21, 2015 Perry Mason - Season 6, vol. 2 - $14.69 http://www.amazon.com/Perry-Mason-Season-Raymond-Burr/dp/B005JZBPJ6?SubscriptionId=AKIAJ7T5BOVUVRD2EFYQ&tag=camelhometopdrops-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B005JZBPJ6 The Perry Mason boxes are expensive. Amazon has had the complete series bundle (all 18 boxes) on sale for just over $180 on at least two occasions before. It usually happens sometime between Black Friday and Christmas or shortly thereafter, so if you want to get them all at once at around $10 each, it might be worth keeping an eye out for price changes. Well, these have always been pretty expensive, so I'll let you decide if it's a bargain. It was my opinion at the time that the black & white shows were much better than the color shows of the later seasons. Two years ago, I purchased the complete set of the black & white episodes (Region 2) from Amazon UK. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saint-Complete-Monochrome-DVD/dp/B000GUK3SS/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1427077705&sr=1-1&keywords=the+saint As you can see, today that box is going for 39.91 GBP. The R2 set of the B&W shows is great. Amazon UK's occasionally had it cheaper in the past (I got it from them for around GBP 30 shipped several years ago), but the current price is still a good deal. Is it good, or am I confusing it with another show called The Wire? I had never seen the show til I bought this set a few months back. Other things I had seen with Chiklis made me think this show is something it is not. I wasn't a Chiklis fan, and I'm still not a big fan of his work, but he does a very good job in this role and the show is interesting when he's not the focus. I'm into Season 4 now. Excellent show imo. Gritty, dramatic, realistic and over the top at the same time. Even goofy at times, which seems realistic. It feels like a real cop show (what do I know about being a cop!) Some very good acting, I've especially liked CCH Pounder, Benito Martinez, Michael Jace and Glen Close in their roles. Very well plotted and paced season story arcs. For all the shows you get the 24.99 price is a great one. Edited March 24, 2015 by jazzbo Quote
GA Russell Posted March 30, 2015 Author Report Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) The Complete Carry On (30 movies) - 30.00 GBP http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EXOZE64/ref=pe_141401_67049071_pe_epc__1p_2_ti For years I had heard about the Carry On movies. Finally, ca. 1984, I had the opportunity to see one - Carry On Nurse. I didn't laugh once. I've loved every one of the old black and white Terry-Thomas, Peter Sellers, Wilfred Hyde-White, etc., movies I've seen. So what happened? Is it me, or were the Carry On movies for a different audience? Any thoughts? Edited March 30, 2015 by GA Russell Quote
crisp Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 They are *very* British and maybe don't travel that well. Although they started out as gentle satires on British institutions (the army, the NHS...), the humour became increasingly dominated by sexual innuendo and this and their excellent repertory cast of famous comedians is what they became famous for (think Benny Hill humour). That said, Nurse was apparently a surprise hit in the US in its day. It's pretty untypical, though, being an early example before the repertory company had been built (Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Hattie Jacques, Barbara Windsor and many others were all regulars) and the sex jokes had taken hold. Try one of the better of the Sixties or Seventies entries for a more accurate picture, e.g., Cleo, Screaming, Up the Khyber... Quote
GA Russell Posted March 30, 2015 Author Report Posted March 30, 2015 Thanks, crisp. I'll take a look at those three. Quote

Dave Garrett Posted April 1, 2015 Report Posted April 1, 2015 Got a DVD catalog in the mail from Daedalus Books today - haven't had a chance to do much more than skim it, but I noticed they had the big FORD AT FOX box which has been mentioned here before for $69.98. I thought that was a great deal until I happened to check Amazon to see what they were selling it for - $55.99! This is a fantastic set, and they're practically giving it away at that price. I guess the big Ford fans all got it when it was first released, but as we get further and further removed from the era in which these films were current, I also think classic films are becoming a harder sell. I never cease to be surprised by the number of folks I encounter who can't bring themselves to watch anything if it's not available on Blu-ray, which automatically disqualifies countless amazing films. http://www.amazon.com/Ford-Fox-Collection-Claudette-Colbert/dp/B000WMA6HI Quote

Yeah, it's definitely one of the heftier DVD sets that's ever been released. The only one I can think of right now that's bigger/heavier is the complete-series Dark Shadows set that's packaged in a large coffin-shaped box. Edited April 11, 2015 by Dave Garrett Quote
