Free For All Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 I just heard via Robin Eubanks that Ray Bryant (who was his uncle) passed away. Haven't seen any obits yet. Sad news. Quote
mjzee Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 Very sad. A great, strong pianist. RIP. I'll play "Somewhere In France" tonight. Quote
Free For All Posted June 2, 2011 Author Report Posted June 2, 2011 I'll play "Somewhere In France" tonight. That's the first one I thought of, and one of my favorites. Quote
GA Russell Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 RIP. His 1966 Gotta Travel On with Clark Terry and Snooky Young was my second jazz album ever. I found it on lala last year and really enjoyed it, with the great music combining with the great memories. Quote
king ubu Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 Very sad! Will play some of his music tomorrow. Quote
JSngry Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 The guy got around, and in quality company. RIP. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 He wrote "Cubano Chant," a favorite of TTK. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 My favorites were the Prestige dates - solo, trio. Quote
Stereojack Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 Oh man, this is terrible news! Ray was one of my favorites. I love "Con Alma" (Columbia), "Alone at Montreux" (Atlantic), "Alone With the Blues" (Prestige). He also contributed to some great sessions by Miles Davis & Sonny Rollins, just to name a couple. mikeweil Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 (edited) Very sad news - R.I.P. He was one of those soloists who made an impression on me that they could improvise forever and ever, chous after chorus - Con Alma on the Columbia LP Stereojack mentioned is a good example. Will spin his Prestige Trio LP for breakfast ... But the Pablo trio LPs were very nice, too - the one with George Duvivier in particular. Edited June 3, 2011 by mikeweil Quote
Chicago Expat Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 The title track to "Lonesome Traveller" always put me in a great mood. RIP. Quote
Stereojack Posted June 2, 2011 Report Posted June 2, 2011 But the Pablo trio LPs were very nice, too - the one with George Duvivier in particular. Is that "Here's Ray Bryant" or "All Blues"? Yes, I want to second that - I also like "Solo Flight" (Pablo), and "Somewhere in France" (Label M). Quote
Christiern Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 This is a shock, a very sad one for me. Apart from his music, which I have valued highly since first hearing "Alone with the Blues" 52 years ago I have fond personal memories of Ray. Quote
Larry Kart Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 His handsomely recorded (by Malcolm Addey) 1998 trio album on JMI "Ray's Tribute To His Jazz Piano Friends" (with Ray Drummond and Winard Harper) is a gem. Nice cover photo of Bryant and soulful accounts from him in the liner notes of his connection to each pianist he pays tribute to. The version of Brubeck's "The Duke" is exceptional; he really plays on that piece. Quote
jazztrain Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 Sigh. "Alone with the Blues" is a long time favorite. I've used it off and on as a musical bed for years. I just heard via Robin Eubanks that Ray Bryant (who was his uncle) passed away. Haven't seen any obits yet. Sad news. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 But the Pablo trio LPs were very nice, too - the one with George Duvivier in particular. Is that "Here's Ray Bryant" or "All Blues"? Yes, I want to second that - I also like "Solo Flight" (Pablo), and "Somewhere in France" (Label M). "Here's Ray Bryant" is the one with Duvivier - that was, IIRC the first album to make me appreciate this great bass player. Somewhere in France - I never found a copy but heard only good things about it. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 Ray was a marvelous jazz piano player. I had the opportunity to get to know him a bit as he was a very close friend of the late John Norris who was one of my very best friends. His many recordings for labels such as Prestige, EmArcy, Atlantic, Pablo and a number of others are very special. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 Sad to hear this. Another fine and respected artist is gone. Quote
Justin V Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 I was just listening to Art Blakey's Orgy in Rhythm two weeks ago. Bryant navigates the waves of percussion quite well. I don't have any of his leader dates, but plan on finding some. RIP. Quote
B. Goren. Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 Not the best news to start the day with. RIP Mr. Bryant. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 Damn - this is sad news to start the day with. Such a fine player - never saw him play I'm sad to say but I did see him in the audience at a Toronto gig once (he took a bow). RIP Mr Bryant and thanks for so much great music. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 ... never saw him play I'm sad to say ... Same here - he and hank Jones were the top of my wish list of players to see. Quote
alankin Posted June 3, 2011 Report Posted June 3, 2011 Currently playing "Somewhere in France" (32 Jazz) a live solo piano set. Beautiful. Quote
