JSngry Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/miles-davis/concerts/fillmore-west-april-10-1970.html?utm_source=NL&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=110527 I mean, they even cop to it, straight up: This is the Fillmore West show that would ultimately be released as Black Beauty in 1973. So, how does this work? Quote
jazzbo Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 I think that it has to be legit. Probably something in the contract for performances that Bill has rights as well? Quote
bertrand Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 Thanks for the warning. I have the CD. Bertrand. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 Thanks for the warning. I have the CD. Bertrand. Same. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 I bet the Vault version doesn't have some of the weird channel swapping mixing going on in the cd and lp. Might be a better listen. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 I bet the Vault version doesn't have some of the weird channel swapping mixing going on in the cd and lp. Might be a better listen. Somebody with both, please check. That'd be interesting to know if their source isn't the actual release. Quote
JSngry Posted May 28, 2011 Author Report Posted May 28, 2011 Did Columbia record the show themselves, have a crew in? Quote
jazzbo Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 I'd say Yes, as Stan Tonkel, an engineer on MANY Columbia sessions, mostly studio, is the credited engineer. So the Vault's is possibly different. Quote
JSngry Posted May 28, 2011 Author Report Posted May 28, 2011 Thanks. My copy is entirely in Japanese, so I wouldn't be able to tell Stan Tonkel from Willie Wonka... Which raises the question...is different source tapes a possible loophole for WV? Surely not... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 Jim, according to this article put out when downloads were first released, it seems that the Vault has attempted to be legal: http://www.billboard.com/news/wolfgang-s-vault-opening-entire-concert-1004016989.story#/news/wolfgang-s-vault-opening-entire-concert-1004016989.story Quote
JSngry Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 Yeah, I'm hip to that, & have bought from them with a clear conscience, will still continue to do so. This just seems really weird, though, releasing a show that's already been released commercially & still remains available. Oh, well, these days, who knows what the legalities are? It's a changing landscape, to be sure. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 (edited) I haven't used them for anything, but I'm sure this isn't the only example. Probably Dead shows, Cream, etc. I think the record company would say "Hey, we'll take the money either way, through the download or from the cd." Why not? And I just looked and it appears as if the cd is not really in print at the moment in the states. And Amazon is selling a download. It's an interesting time for music fans. JSngry Posted May 29, 2011 Author Report Posted May 29, 2011 No longer in print as a domestic? Wow, that really didn't last very long, did it.... Did it have liner notes, the American release? Quote
PHILLYQ Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 Mine(US release) has notes by Chick Corea. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 It was in print a good 13 years or so. I have a copy that I got a while ago but I still see "Black Beauty", "At Fillmore East" (traded it cuz the complete shows sans edits are somewhere) "In Concert" frequently at my local CD shop around here. bertrand Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 My copy was a Japanese pressing I got in a Borders' bargain bin for $11. Bertrand. Quote
