mjzee
Yes, the Horowitz box is the complete Columbia + RCA, remastered. Of course, now not totally complete, since there is the subsequent Carnegie Hall box with much unreleased material.

Definitely got enough then ... ten plus discs from each label, and those are filled up, unlike those in the big box.Not much interest in the Carnegie box either, can take some Horowitz every now and then (and love some of it a lot!), but unlike other artist's monster boxes, I don't feel this one's for me. I just hate the fact that the boxes are limited editions - buy 'em or lose out. In fact, the Horowitz box I got is OOP, but somehow Amazon Germany had some recently at a good price. king ubu
I guess it was re-pressed, as was the Heifetz box?amazon.it says it will be around from tomorrow (but their price is much higher), on .fr or .com all you get are resellers ... so not sure, but actually I assumed it was back, but I wouldn't really know.
king ubu
But I guess such second pressings won't really last all that long either, so either way, it's buy now or miss. Not sure for instance about the status of the Reiner box ... released in October, currently gone, but amazon.com says "in stock June 11", so it might not be gone for good just yet (but I'm not in the market for it). With some of the recent Universal (Italy) boxes, it seems they printed limited runs, which were sold out very soon, sometimes on the actual release date or just days later, but then they were back a few weeks later and you could pre-order them. Guess they're testing the waters to see how many units they can still sell.
mjzee
And then you get the boxes that linger for a long time, at steadily decreasing prices. So you never quite know when to buy.
king ubu
Yes ... I've got a threshold related to the custom fees (which kick in as soon as I have to pay VAT - the fees are in the worst case 3.5 times as expensive as the minimal VAT value), so often I'm hoping prices fall below that value (which is roughly at 50 € or exactly at 62 CHF). This has so far paid off pretty well, but it might happen that I miss something because I keep waiting. The really big boxes - Heifetz, Rubinstein, Gould/Bach, Toscanini, Furtwängler are ones I got, the Horowitz (both jackets and Carnegie), Perahia or Reiner would be others I won't get - will never go below that of course. Very often though, patience "helps" ... the Vivarte box, the Henze DG box, the Richter solo box and a few others I'd been eyeing for weeks or more often months eventually did go for less. One of the craziest was the Baroque Opera box - that pre-order price was indeed cheap! Haven't explored its contents at all yet, though, I need lots and lots of time to digest operas. mjzee
I don't care much for operas; that's one frontier that's been too far to cross. I did get the Perahia, sad that I missed the big Glenn Gould box.
king ubu
Only have the Bach box by Gould (OOP too, it seems) ... the Glenn Gould Edition that was comprised of various volumes mostly split by composers works fine for me, as far as his other recordings are concerned. Still lots to explore there ... but I'd definitely be tempted if his complete jackets collection would make a return! mjzee
The two I've been thinking of getting are Philips: Obsessed With Sound and Archiv Production 1947-2013. They both look good.
king ubu
I've got the Archiv ... have played prob. 80% of it (have a few duplications there). I found the All-Baroque box quite a bit better, but the Archiv box offers some most fascinating glimpses at the times of early (on-the-way-to-)HIP performing, and some of those remain indeed very good, I'd say - I'm stil far from an expert, but it boils down to: I can still listen to those recordings and get plenty of enjoyment out of them, no matter if I'm familiar with later, more "correct" performances. Also of course it does contain a few things of more recent vintage, but for that, I'd say get the All-Baroque if you don't have it yet (these two, in most cases, omit duplication pretty well - meaning some works are in both, of course, but in different recordings). These are others that never quite took enough of a price plunge to spare me from being ripped off by post/customs, and I was even crazy enough to get the Baroque one in a local store ... but I've certainly not regretted buying either of them (with the Baroque as well, I guess I've still got about 20% that I've never yet listened, while other things I've played several times and love very much ... i.e. still my favourite of Monteverdi's "Orfeo" ...) mjzee
I wasn't aware of the All Baroque Box, probably because they don't picture it as a cube on Amazon! More to consider; thanks.

king ubu
Leonard Bernstein - The Symphony Edition - € 53.90 @ amazon.it 44€ on check out - that's plain ridiculous! Is this on the way out? The Günter Wand Edition has also taken a price drop (€ 38.90 at amazon.it) Also it seems Sony is re-pressing the Gould Bach box: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Johann-Sebastian-Bach-1685-1750-Glenn-Gould-Bach-Edition/hnum/2750965

ejp626
Very good deal indeed I got it at a pre-order price, so I can't complain too much, but it was more than that... My bigger complaint is that with all these boxes (and this is big indeed) I have to make a huge mental effort to go open it up. I did rip a lot of it, and that helps to some degree. king ubu
55€ for the Living Stereo Collection @ amazon.it damn ... there's enough Reiner, Munch and Monteux in there to make it most tempting even though I have all the Heifetz and Rubinstein ... king ubu
The Vivarte box goes for a pretty nice price too (€ 54): http://www.amazon.it/Vivarte-Collection-Abraham-Van-Kerckhoven/dp/B00AOTZ156/ And so does the *great* All-Baroque Box from DG (€ 62): http://www.amazon.it/The-All-Baroque-Various-Artists/dp/B008BP1LS6/ Henze for € 51: http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00ECTZJXI/ Boulez for € 40: http://www.amazon.it/Complete-Works-Ltd-Pierre-Boulez/dp/B00BLDHPZS/ Philips Original Jackets for € 60: http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B0091HVMVO/ Crazy! The Vivarte has been even cheaper now and then though, but still ... never saw the All-Baroque even remotely close to that price range and I really love that one! I jumped on the DG All-Baroque Box. P.S.: 4.90 postage/shipping. Didn't people say that had gotten more expensive somewhere along the way? I guess they're just going to send it from amazon.de anyway ... which usually happens when I order from Italy or the UK. Thanks again, Flurin. Would have missed that one. king ubu
I think it's only transatlantic shipping that got much more expensive - within Europe, nothing much seems to change. The Baroque box has never been that cheap, I think - a real bargain for a wonderful set (provided you don't have much overlap). The only letdown is the booklet - no notes on idividual discs/works, but then at that price, and there's always the internets to read up more if needed - and of course for old folks such as us, there's books, too . I went for the Lenny and Living Stereo boxes ...
