Classical music bargains

In terms of price/CD, this is quite a bargain, but I haven't decided if I am going to bite or not: 51 CDs for under 50 pounds (Sir Colin Davis: RCA Legacy)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GWE4NQU/ref=s9_simh_gw_p15_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0JK1H0WYA20PB61583NV&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294

Looks like quite a lot of Mozart, Brahms, Schubert and Sibelius, mostly symphonies and a few concertos. Vocal pieces, such as arias, requiems and Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, round out the set.

resist, ejp. a false bargain since there's approximately zero RCA recordings by Davis that are either better than his Philips sides or better than equivalent competition from other conductors/labels. And if there are a couple/three of those discs you're curious about, pick them up cheap separately. There are some excellent Davis recordings from earlier in his career but RCA + the live LSO stuff are almost wholly mediocre at best.

I totally disagree as far as Davis' RCA Sibelius symphonies recordings are concerned, in my opinion they're on par with his earlier Philips interpretations.

just in case, as was my assumption, the big Decca suckers will or seem to be back very soon:

best price for the Richter (Feb. 4) is here:

http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00GYHSYW4/

best for the Ansermet (no date, but amazon.it says "9-13 days", which sounds close enough, the others state "currently not in stock"):

I pre-ordered the Richter on Amazon Germany when their price was about 58 euros and it's on its way to me for that price. I guess I was lucky.

currently € 35.99 on amazon.de:

I have to say I think I am through collecting the war horses (maybe I just mean the chestnuts), even when done by great conductors. I basically am only going after sets if there is something quite distinctively different (like a lot of the French repertoire which I don't have, or Russians other than Tchaikovsky). I'm sure this really is a great set, but I'm just not going to get around to most of it.

However, I will admit that I was intrigued by the Prokofiev 5. I was pretty thrilled to find what should be the performance on this box paired with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto on this CD from Archipel: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005IMZGUO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I notice the Boston/Ozawa Mahler cycle has snuck back in at a budget-y price. Probably not for me but at this price some may wish to add it to the pile....

It is one of those Italian Universal items, I believe.

Did we discuss their Bohm edition, by the way? Another bargain

http://www.amazon.it/The-Symphonies-Box-22cd-Bohm/dp/B00BK40R1M/ref=pd_sim_m_8

I mean let's face it, hats off to universal.it for their jazz and classical sets.

We didn't discuss it here, I don't think, but there is a Mengelberg set which is also one of theirs. I'm quickly scouring the website to see if we missed anything.

There's a Chailly set from 2012 that I don't think we discussed. Anyone spot anything else?

You've been in the business longer than me ... I'm through in some areas I feel - not as far as listening goes, but I don't need more recordings of stuff ... but symphonic is still mostly new to me. So yeah, I plucked that day indeed :)

Believe me, not disparaging that set, but I do have a lot of Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and even Sibelius. (I've just never been able to get into Bruckner, Mahler or Wagner, though I have them fairly well represented as well.)

I'm making a conscious effort to go through the last few sets I ordered to make sure I have listened to everything at least once. This means a fair bit of Isaac Stern and some David Oistrakh. Not such a terrible fate I guess...

Oh, it will take me years probably to make it through it all once ... still haven't started with the Ansermet box at all. And no problem, didn't take your comment negatively at all - I know where you're coming from and understand that position very well. I've got lots of Beethoven and some Brahms, but not much of the others you mention (well, lots of their violin conertos, but ...)

This one, but I think it might have been mentioned - looks like the most interesting of these:

goes for 28 € at the moment:

Still not sure about buying the Sawallisch, but for "Elias" alone I should ... then there's also this sucker, I paid like five times as much for half of its contents shortly before it arrived:

it's been dirt-cheap ever since it was out (22 € at amazon.it), yet I've not bought it (having already the Chopin - or much of it -, Schumann, Schubert, Debussy and Encores)

I've got much less interest in historical boxes than others BUT Böhm is a familiar DG staple and Hogwood one way at least to do the Mozart syms (though they are all in the Boehm box). Ansermet a draw for repertoire? Maybe, but some of it rather faded - ? And Richter? If I would ever buy a piano box maybe this one...

Do you really want Elias??
