jazzbo Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 I'm pretty sure I'm done and will stick with this edition. Quote
ejp626 Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 I've enjoyed this one a lot: Yes, I have this with a totally different cover. Quote
king ubu Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 The above is a cheapo release - akin to the various boxes Sony has put out of RCA and Columbia material. It comes with no booklet or liners at all like those others do. Typical cheapo repackaged one, wouldn't pay more than 20-25$ for it. Quote
J.A.W. Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 (edited) That Bruno Weil HIP set is great, and so are the incomplete Christopher Hogwood set, the Trevor Pinnock and Frans Brüggen sets with the "Sturm und Drang" symphonies and the Sigiswald Kuijken sets with the "Paris" symphonies. The incomplete Roy Goodman set is also very good, though it is marred by way too reverberant acoustics. Colin Davis' "big-band Haydn" sets with the "London" symphonies are my favourites in the non-HIP dept. Antál Doráti's complete non-HIP set is an early favourite of mine. The Freiburger Barockorchester and Pinnock made excellent recordings of symphonies 6-8.All in my opinion, of course Edited November 5, 2013 by J.A.W. Bigshot Posted November 6, 2013 Report Posted November 6, 2013 It's hard to find bad sets of Haydn symphonies. They stand up to a variety of approaches. Quote

jazzbo Posted November 6, 2013 Report Posted November 6, 2013 (edited) I'm really enjoying this Stuttgart set and think that's enough for me! Sound is very nice. (I also have the ones Bernstein conducted in the Symphonies box). Edited November 6, 2013 by jazzbo Quote

Д.Д. Posted November 9, 2013 Author Report Posted November 9, 2013 btw seems I was a minute too late for the Sweelinck - the order is still open but expected to deliver in mid december only I received Sweelinck, and listened to three CDs. It's OK, nothing special. The music is sort of samey, the the performance is OK, but not outstanding. I actually like the 3-CD set on Etcetra more. Quote
king ubu Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 okay ... guess I'll mul it over for a while and maybe cancel my order then ... and I guess I'll take a pass on the Hantaï, too Quote
Д.Д. Posted November 9, 2013 Author Report Posted November 9, 2013 Here is a Sweelinck / Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam sample to help you in your mulling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTc_MgwQ9lU Quote
king ubu Posted November 9, 2013 Report Posted November 9, 2013 I like that! But then I have no comparison as I don't know anything else so far. Guess I'll just let the order run and see it if comes through or not. Quote

Also recently got the Jochum box of the London Symphonies plus 3 additional symphonies. Am enjoying the 5 or 6 I have heard thus far. Quote
David Ayers Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 Another one - bit OOP maybe....lean and sharp Quote
Tom 1960 Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 I picked this up today as opposed to the much pricier version. I think I'll somehow survive without the booklet. http://www.amazon.com/Mozart-Complete-Concertos-Wolfgang-Amadeus/dp/B006XOBFB0/ref=pd_sim_sbs_m_1 Quote
jazzbo Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 I have the Complete Sony Perahia box set and really enjoy it, especially the five dvds, my Dad and I watch those. Was not at all expensive and it's an amazing box set! http://www.amazon.com/Murray-Perahia--First-40-Years/dp/B008NBEY3C/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1384122682&sr=1-1&keywords=Murray+Perahia Quote
king ubu Posted November 10, 2013 Report Posted November 10, 2013 Wow, that one's considerably pricier over here! I also got the cheapo Mozart box and love that - don't think I need the big one though, but then beyond Mozart I've not heard much Perahia at all yet. Quote
T.D. Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Berkshire Record Outlet is stocking a new label called "Piano Classics". Appears to be something like Regis - licensed (from defunct companies) bargain re-issues. There are some attractive items. I'm definitely going for Ustvolskaya, Galina [1919-2006]: 'Complete Piano Music': The Six Piano Sonatas; Twelve Preludes. (Ivan Sokolov, piano. Rec. 10/95) 2 cds @ $5.98 (currently have some Oleg Malov performances on Megadisc, but the sound quality isn't great, and one can't have too much Ustvolskaya!) Quote

king ubu Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 Big Ansermet box just out on Decca, 32 discs, "French Music" (can't find it on amazon nor on the Decca homepage): http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Decca/4807898 might be interesting, repertoire-wise, but I'm not sure I need *that* much of it .... opinions?
