Szeryng recorded K 364 with Gibson and the New Philharmonia Orchestra as well, with Bruno Giuranna on viola.

Anyway, with free shipping and VAT deducted, this is an offer I can't let go.

Kind of odd that nearly all the other Szeryng Mozart concertos made it onto CD (many in this box) but K364 has never made it onto CD (unless I am just really missing something). If I was in Europe, I definitely would have gone for the Amazon.de offer, but I was able to scarf up one of the last new copies from Newberry, and that worked out pretty well.

Anyway, the De Leeuw is quite tempting. I saw that Amazon.de will possibly carry the De Leeuw in the future, but you can't order it there now. As it happens I have the Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time with De Leeuw (in a different pairing). That makes it a harder decision to be sure.

Not sure what's in there ... but I just spent about the same amount getting a copy of "La Tarantella" (and already have "All' Improvviso"). Considering everything I've heard by Pluhar so far has been at least very good (some of it excellent, and most of it very thought-provoking, too), I'm interested:

The booklet seems not to be included - like with the reissue of Badura-Skodas Schubert - but the PDF is around for free, so ... not sure yet, but I held in my hands and "shook" a sealed copy at the shop today and it seemed far too light to contain such a substantial booklet (as does, for instance, the Café Zimmermann Bach box).

prolly but a glitch, so act fast: 614NGhxvhIL.jpg8.23 on amazon.de I've got the Szeryng on vinyl and it's great! Too bad the Sinfonia concertante in the above box seems not to be his ...

Not sure about that. If you go through Amazon, they report that it is a repacking of this set (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Mozart-Edition-Vol-Violin-Concertos/dp/B00004YSBF/ref=cm_cr_dp_asin_lnk) and if you poke around long enough you get a back cover that indicates the Sinfonia concertante (KV 364) is Szeryng, Iona Brown and Nobuko Imai. I imagine this is the one you mean. Generally, these sets go for $25-30 used, so this is a good but not jaw-dropping deal. Something I will consider seriously, nonetheless.Actually, that doesn't make much sense -- the cover is very confusing, perhaps even deliberately misleading, but it is true it is unlikely there would be two violins on KV 364. Oh well. It appears, though, that once new berry comics sells out it's $26 set, it jumps in price to $214. ($150 used Like New).

After going up again to as much as €38 last week, it was back to €8.80 again yesterday. I immediately ordered a copy to gift during the holidays. Thank for the tip.

I'm sure my parents will too. Their mini system makes every CD sound equally good regardless of mastering. It's a marvel.;)

How lucky they are! :) I've been transforming my parents' system with better components. Luckily the beautiful cherry wood cabinet Dad had built in '62 is still doing its part as are the EV full range speakers (reconed in the 'eighties) inside.

I finally broke down and ordered this puppy:

Ha, mine's on the way since last week ... hope it arrives today or tomorrow!

there is some overlap with the (excellent) All Baroque box, right?

Posted

Yes - but not too much ... Minkowski with Rameau's "Symphonie Imaginaire", the Gabrieli "Music for San Rocco" disc, Gardiner with Monteverdi's "Vespro della beata vergine" ... not sure that's really all there is.

To me, there's more overlap with single releases (Richter's recording ot the St Matthew, Curtis' of "Alcina", the Händel arias by Kozena (not really that great anyway, I think). I'd not need the single discs extracted from other boxes I've already got, either: Mozart piano concertos (Bilson/Gardiner), Beethoven Symphonies (Gardiner), the Victoria disc (that box is still unlistened though) ... other popular releases included are McCreesh's recording of Händel's "Messiah" which I don't yet have ... there are a few other discs I'm not really interested in all that much, but then there are others I very much wanted to get (like the Deller or Otter "Lamenti" ones).

The Goldbergs are by Trevor Pinnock (the Baroque box has Roussel, I think?), the Scarlatti Sonatas are by Kirkpatrick (the Baroque has Pinnock, I think)

On first sight, it looks great!

Indeed! I've got some more duplification and triplification between the two and the Gardiner Collection, but these boxes are cheap (and even with duplicates they use much less shelf space than single discs would), so I'm not complaining at all.

The Sleeves are a bit on the flimsy side here - as they are in the Baroque box. But the booklet at nearly 200 pages is much bigger (not sure if it's better on substance yet).

Les bons plans Classique blog has links to new Giulini boxes at pretty good prices: http://bons-plans-classique.blogspot.co.at/

It's a little hard to tell, but the 4 CD Chicago years appears to have a lot of overlap with (or indeed be a reissue of) this 4 CD set from EMI: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tribute-Giulini-Birthday-Chicago-Recordings/dp/B0001ZMBV0/ref=sr_1_6?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1383228466&sr=1-6&keywords=giulini

Now there is a different 5 CD set of Giulini recording with the CSO from DG, but there does not appear to be any overlap.

Curiously, the Amazon.co.uk price for the largest set (The London Years) is not the best, though it is for those smaller sets. That may change after taking shipping into account. I haven't worked through all the details of exchange rates and shipping, but Presto Classical is offering these at very good prices as well -- and they have a lot more details of what is actually in these boxes. I definitely might spring for one or two:

It is a straight reissue. Now as I was checking this, I see that another massive box set has slipped under my radar: Arthur Rubinstein Plays Great Piano Concertos. Apparently it was released just a couple of weeks ago. (If listed upthread, my apologies)

Here are a few places it is on sale for fairly absurdly low prices: http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Sony/88883737172

http://www.amazon.ca/Arthur-Rubinstein-Plays-Great-Concertos/dp/B00EC0VWEM

Sorry to keep going on tangents, but one detailed review of the Rubinstein box said that many of the recordings were top notch, though he slightly preferred Rubinstein-Krips for the Beethoven concertos (as opposed to Rubinstein-Barenboim in the box). It seems that there is an ultra cheap 4 CD box set of Rubinstein-Krips that is making the rounds):
