Sony's excellent 60 CD Vivarte box of HIP recordings is on preorder sale at Amazon.de for just over $75 shipped to the US.

Or if you prefer, you can spend 300 euro on it!

Probably going to pass on this, but here is more info on the set: Vivarte. Looks like it ships in March, and probably prices will stabilize around then.

I just took the plunge on this. Preordered from CD Universe for $85.89 shipped.

30€ from amazon.es

I don't know about shipping to other EU countries or even US vs. Canada, but the shipping prices from Amazon.es to Canada are so outrageous that I no longer bother to look there. They're really out of line with the other Amazon companies.

you quoted me before I cleaned up my post ... freaked up there, sorry!

shipping from amazon.es to Switzerland is 7€ for one or more articles - anyway, I won't go for the Cliburn box anyway, got plenty of recordings of the piano repertoire by now and am generally not on the lookout for more big boxes ...

It's definitely more than that to Canada, at least for what I was looking for. I have more box sets than I need, but I learned never to say never. I may get a few of the "missing" EMI sets from the Presto Classical sale (have to decide fairly soon).

At least at the moment, I am doing a much better job working through classical box sets and identifying favorite recordings than I am listening to jazz. I'm probably 70% classical, 10% jazz, 10% rock/pop, 10% world music in my listening habits at the moment.

I saw the Ashkenazy box. A bit tempting, but not enough of a bargain yet for my tastes. I imagine the prices will drop further down the road.

I think this one counts (barely) as it is just 3 CDs, so barely a box: Rozhdestvensky Conducts Shostakovich (from Brilliant).

Generally can be found for $9 from Amazon resellers. Haven't listened to it yet (ordered it last night), but it looks promising. Apparently all live performances from the USSR State Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra and USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra from 1968 to 1982.

Details up now:

Some overlap with the -- mighty fine, I might add! -- Baroque Box: Bach's mass in b minor, Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, Gabrieli, Rameau's "Symphonie imgainaire" by Minkowski. Also it includes the classic Richter Passion of St Matthew, which many will already own, I assume ... in other places, they were kind to those who got the Baroque box, including different recordings of the Goldberg Variations (Rousset in the Baroque, Pinnock in the Archiv Produktion), Scarlatti sonatas (Pinnock in the Baroque, Kirkpatrick in the Archiv), or Händel's "Messiah" (Pinnock in the Baroque, McCreesh in the Archiv).

Not sure yet myself, but it does contain some stuff I'm mighty interested in.

Just in case, here's the link to the Baroque Box:

  • 2 weeks later...

7 Mozart operas, Gardiner recordings, 18 CD for slightly over USD 60:

Not in the super-bargain category, but pretty darn attractive.

Recently got it, only heard "Così" and "Zauberflöte" out of it, but I'm already sure it's well worth having (got it from some european amazon site for I think around 40€)

Amazon.de is taking preorders for two CD boxes at about a buck and a half a disk. These appear to be fully packed 60 minute + CDs, not the short running time Original Jacket ones.

Sony: Bruno Walter Edition (39 CDs)

http://www.amazon.de/Bruno-Walter/dp/B00BNZN27E/

DGG: Claudio Abbado- The Symphony Edition (41 CDs)

http://www.amazon.de/Claudio-Abbado-Symphony/dp/B00BN1QV0S/

The big guns are starting to slide into bargain box territory.

I should probably take the Abbado a bit more seriously, but I am about done with replicating the standard repertoire (I did make an exception with the Steinberg EMI set but mostly because of the recordings with Nathan Milstein). So the boxes that I have ordered lately have mostly been of lesser known Russian composers or in a few cases famous string soloists doing their thing.

As far as Bruno Walter, I recently purchased the slimline Walter conducts Mozart and from way back I had the Sony OJC set of his stereo Bruckner and Mahler recordings. So by passing on this set, I am basically passing on another Beethoven and Brahms cycle, and a handful of other recordings. I am sure the new set is a really nice one, but I think I'll be ok without it. :P

Just trying to show some restraint here. ;)

To be honest, I am a little more interested in the Decca set that is coming out at the same time, covering an earlier part of Abbado career:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Claudio-Abbado-The-Decca-Years/dp/B00BN1QV1M

Though even here, I might settle for this 2 CD set that focuses on Prokofiev, Hindemith & Janácek:

(A little bit harder to find than I thought on Amazon.com -- it is here).

I don't have nearly as much Abbado as other conductors, but I do have his Mendelssohn set on DG, which is still quite reasonable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005ONMP/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
