B. Goren.
Not sure anyone has mentioned the Stokowski Columbia Stereocollection. It is just like an OJC series, though the booklet is on the thin side. The Ives disc has some bonus material, from various Ives sampler LPs that Columbia put out I think the Ormandy RCA setis a pretty good deal, but you might have to go with one of the Amazon resellers. I've been listening to the Stokowski and it seems fine to me. I have just put in an order for the Ormandy. This one would seem like a better choice for Stokowski: http://www.amazon.co.../dp/B006ZJJ70O/ Don't know him yet, though. This is also a great Stokowski set: $29.76 on Amazon. ejp626
Another one of these EMI big boxes coming out - this time the complete EMI recordings of Constantin Silvestri. Really almost no info on this (even whether it is 13 or 15 CDs) at the moment, but the pre-order price is just about $30 (slightly higher at Amazon.ca) and it seems hard to go wrong at that price. Some of the individual recordings that must be on this set have been highly praised. I think I'll go for it.
ejp626
Releasing at the same time as the Silverstri is a 6 CD set (for $4 more than the Silvestri for half the CDs!) of Toscanini (the Complete HMV Recordings). I assume no overlap with the huge RCA set, but hard to tell sometimes. I think I have enough Toscanni to digest for the moment. king ubu
There are also ICONs coming up by Brigitte Fassbaender, Boris Christoff and John McCormack. Here's a full set of links: http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Brigitte-Fassbaender-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXF8A/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Arturo-Toscanini-Compilation/dp/B00AFARIZA/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Constantin-Silvestri-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXHII/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-Boris-Christoff-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXKC6/ http://www.amazon.fr/Icons-John-Mccormack-Compilation/dp/B00ACHXE4U/ I guess onlythe first two are of interest to me. A Lark Ascending
My grandmother went to school with John McCormack! Remembered him as a snotty nosed kid eyeing up the sweets in the shop window in Athlone, Ireland where they both grew up. Bet he never told the Pope about that. David Ayers
Got this Nielsen set for 8 dollars. Any good? I'm currently comparing Jarvi, Vanska, and about-to-be-completed Davis versions. I can see that some of it is sort-of meaningful, but no-one has really made me feel it. So far. The floodgates may open.PS I am not new to Nielsen - at all - this is my nth attempt to make him work for me, and the most sustained so far.... I looked up several of the works in the short description of the link I provided and while they're all included, they seem to be the NBC versions (I only compared with my anally-retentive list, didn't yet dig out the shoebox as you call it).The Beethoven symphonies and some overtures are included, but not all of it. StarThrower
I am new to Nielsen, which is why I made a minimal investment in the Brilliant Classics set. I've had good luck with some of their other sets by Henze, and Debussy. But I haven't listened to the Nielsen set yet. i'm not really a late romantic symphony fan, but I thought I'd give him a try. I'm more a fan of modern symphonies by Honegger, Hartmann, Schnittke, Lutoslawski, William Schuman, and the Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of Sallinen's symphonies and concertos box on the CPO label. Edited January 14, 2013 by starthrower

Hm, but I'm talking of orchestras not radio stations. Will have to dig up the big box, it's buried unter piles of discs

Some of the individual recordings that must be on this set have been highly praised. I think I'll go for it. I actually had forgotten I pulled the trigger on this set. It's gone up an additional $5 on Amazon.ca but is holding steady at $30 on Amazon.com. (Edit, now $35 on Amazon. ) It is indeed 15 CDs. Set list is very heavy on Russian composers (Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsokov), a smidgin of Brahms (Hungarian Dances), Dvorak Symphonies 7-9 (two versions of the 9th!) and a couple of CDs with a bit more of a French flavor: Berlioz, Saint-Saens and Paul Dukas. Mostly everything in the standard repertoire, though some of the Russian symphonies are less known. Still, it looks like a really promising set that steers away from the Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms emphasis of so many of the other EMI sets. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just that I have enough Beethoven sets to last me the rest of my life... I have a handful of these recordings, and it's an outstanding series! I never buy such mega-boxes, because of the likelihood of ending up with a surfeit of CDs I never listen to, but this is one of the most tempting I've seen. Thanks. [Added] But how do you figure free shipping to USA? I see 79.95 Euros (which is around USD 108) with free shipping to Germany only. Edited January 26, 2013 by T.D. king ubu
some new ones coming up: Never heard of Kapell, but the Perlman looks interesting, so does the Boulez!
David Ayers
That Boulez/Schoenberg covers a lot of ground. It will be a pity if it doesn't include texts. The sound is rather dated - but you guys who love these box sets of old recordings will be used to that!
