Hope EMI continues with their 20th Century Classics series (http://www.emiclassi...XJ5IENsYXNzaWNz ) , but frankly I can't think of any of the "big" composers they have not covered yet (well, they actually miss Berg and Webern... and all Americans... they still miss a lot actually).

Any particular favorites and recommendations there?

I've laid eyes on the Honegger and the Satie but haven't jumped for them (nor for any others from the series).

Respighi, Roussel, Hartmann (the one with piano works - the symphonies are good, but I don't like the Metzmacher performances that much ), Milhaud. Ravel and Prokofiev (orchestral) look good.

You might want to check out the EMI 20th Century Masterpieces Box: http://www.amazon.it/20th-Century-Masterpieces-Classical-Edizione/dp/B001DCQJUY?SubscriptionId=AKIAIVGTH525N57WM2NQ&tag=pricenoia-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B001DCQJUY

Thanks!

Would anyone have a complete list?

I don't have the complete list but if you go to Europadisc and do Advanced Search, then enter "EMI 20th" under 'label', I think that will show you them all.

Thanks for that. Still a conspicuous lack of American composers. Might be because EMI already has a budget American Classics series running: http://www.emiclassics.com/catalogueresults.php?sser=QW1lcmljYW4gQ2xhc3NpY3M=

Thanks again, guys! The Box is darn cheap and might give me more directions - I'll consider it!

The Glazunov disc (with Milstein and Rostropovich) looks nice!

So do the Enescu, the Ligeti and several others!

For Ligeti you might want to go for the cheapo box on Teldec (http://www.amazon.it/The-Ligeti-Project-Various-Composers/dp/B0016A8E1K?SubscriptionId=AKIAIVGTH525N57WM2NQ&tag=pricenoia-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0016A8E1K )

You most definitely do BUT you still need the second quartet either in the Artemis (EMI) or the Arditti (Sony) version.

WHOAH! Thanks!

Seems the number of classical bargains these days is really endless!

You know, one of the reasons why I never yet more than dabbled with classical music is that in Switzerland, many single classical CDs cost easily 30€ - single discs, okay? Of course you can hang out in stores and then order online, but stil ...

As for the string quartets ... what's wrong with the LaSalle version on the DG disc here:

http://www.amazon.de/Kammerkonzert-Ramifications-Aventures-Streichquartett-aeterna/dp/B00000E3YZ/

?

Just asking - as the Artemis versions are of course easy to find, too ... (Arditti seems to be more difficult though).

Too much Toscanini for me. Now, if it was Hermann Scherchen.......

I hear you, brother. Hermann Scherchen- you're my main man. Yes, he's a good stuff (thanks, Marc Bolan- RIP).

I'm not even sure who owns the rights to those Westminster recordings- probably MCA. Quite a few of them are re-issued by Tahra, including this beautiful box that is still available from good folks at Berkshire Outlet.

STOP PRESS I forgot that there is a Henze title in this series... I am an enthusiast of the choral 9th symphony but I assume the text is not supplied and I have a feeling that without it is hard to get the whole point of it.... all the stuff on that disc is worthwhile.

That enlightenment box is exactly what I've been looking for. Worth shipping to the US for sure. Thanks for the tip!

That's a pretty insanely low price. I have much of the repetoire already (though by different artists -- with exception of Tokyo String Quartet doing Beethoven quartets) but there are certainly quite a number of composers that would be new to me (Kuhnau, Sammartini, Stamitz, Tartini, Pergolesi), so it seems worth the 18 or so pounds to ship it cross the pond.

Got the Enlightenment box. It contains a 260-page booklet! In a budget box!!! Just printing it should have costed a small fortune. I don't get it.

Looks like these "cheapos" are coming directly from the manufacturer. Probably over-produced them and are liquidating the box themselves.
