neveronfriday Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 (edited) Now, I'm aware of the Mosaic box which I intend to buy, but can anyone here recommend good (if possible remastered or just good-sounding) small group recordings (CD only) by Teddy Wilson? I intend to get a whole bunch. Any info (also regarding sources where I can order these from online) is appreciated because there seems to be a whole lot of crappy stuff out there ... Cheers! Chuck Nessa Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 I suggest the Storyville disc titled Masters of Jazz Vol. 11. Two trio dates from 1968 and 1980. Though it seems to be out of print, keep your eyes out for another Storyville called Revisits the Goodman Years. You can order direct from Storyville. Quote
neveronfriday Posted January 7, 2004 Author Report Posted January 7, 2004 Thanks Chuck! I am already on their site. Hadn't been there for a while. I just stumbled across the 2-CD Storyville release of the 1940 Complete Fargo Dance date by Ellington. Has anyone checked that one out yet? Cheers! Quote
catesta Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 You probably already have it, but if you don't, it's a great date and the sound ain't too bad on this one. Quote

Yep, I do have it. Great sound actually. And Young at his best. Does anyone have the Japanese Press & Teddy + 3 release? Where's the difference? Cheers! Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 A recommendation with a footnote: The Collectables CD that includes two Wilson Trio albums recorded for Columbia in 1959 ("Mr. Wilson and Mr. Gershwin") and 1960 ("And Then They Wrote..."). The latter is a particular delight, a series of salutes to other pianist-composers that includes a walking version of "'Round Midnight" that's to die for (wonder if Monk ever heard it), a marvelous reshaping of "Artistry in Rhythm," and an intense take on Brubeck's "The Duke." Sound is OK, but when I compare the CD to an LP copy I have of "And Then They Wrote..." I'm disappointed. The LP was one of the great 30th St. Studio recordings, tremendous airy presence on all three instruments, while the CD collapses the sonic space a bit and loses some of that magical presence on the piano. If I'd only heard the CD, I might not feel that anything was awry, but there you are. On the other hand, the music is great, and unless you can find copies of the LPs, this looks like the only way to go now. Don't think it's likely that this material will be remastered in our lifetimes. Quote
neveronfriday Posted January 8, 2004 Author Report Posted January 8, 2004 Hi Larry, I just ordered it! Thanks for the recommendation. It sounds just like what I am looking for. Cheers! Quote
brownie Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 The 'Three Little Words' trio album on Black and Blue is a delightful date which you should be able to get without problems. Wilson has Milt Hinton and Oliver Jackson along. Quote
mmilovan Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 I own crappy sounding Columbia CK 45275 "Roy Eldridge Little Jazz" CD. It is not Teddy Willson all the way! Not recordings are in good sound! Nor they are trio sessions! Still it is some of the best Teddy ever (my favourite certainly is "Blues In C# Minor"). God knows when Columbia will issue complete Pre WWII recordings Teddy Willson's recordings. Some of the best small group recordings of swing era. Quote
