Shit.

I got nearly all this stuff (the Mitchell, not the N.O.) on LP, but the Mosaic Mystique Bug bit again.

Ordered last night, the last order of business before going to bed, Is that sick or what?

If it's sick, then I guess we all have the disease. There's no cure :g

Got my set as a Christmas present :D

I noticed that it had a pretty high number, so am not surprised to find it on the running low list. This is Blue's best work IMO.

I'm kicking myself (a common habit) for not getting the Chico Hamilton Mosaic set before it went OOP.

Payment is temporary; regret is enduring!

Payment is enduring too. Have you ever estimated the total cost to you of your recorded music collection? ;)

"Payment is enduring..."

Only if you use credit cards ;)

As for the calculating the cost of my music collection, why would I want to do that!?

It cost as much as I was happy to spend on it.

I've been meaning to purchase the Blue Mitchell Mosaic for a couple of years. I always decide against it because I know it's still available. When I noticed the set had gone to last chance my purchase was promptly made. I've heard & read too much good about this set. I don't want to miss out on Blue. B)

I remember reading on the old board that some people weren't enamored with the last session or two on the Mitchell Mosaic. What do people here think of them? I'm on the fence on this one, with The Thing to Do coming out as an RVG in the summer, and would rather not buy a set that's got a lot of stuff I'll never listen to.

Mine arrived this morning - thats not bad going for surface mail to the UK.

NOW i'm going to cut back on purchases - well except for the new selects.

I don't remember the later albums included, but if you got the quintet dates with Cook only, there's another highly enjoyable thing there: the first album, with Joe Henderson, Leo Wright, Duke Pearson... consider that one, too!

And you get the nice booklet and box and all...

ubu :) (lucky owner of said set)

strange, I just talked to mosaic this morning and they said that there are 272 of the blue mitchell set left and 212 of the atlantic new orleans set.

So there still is a Mitchell for more than every second of the 570 members posting here...

Be sure to let an Atlantic New Orleans over for me. Gotta wait till end of january to be able to get that...

Mine just arrived this afternoon. My wallet is a little lighter, but my ears are feelin' pretty good 'bout now.

Also picked up the Moncur Select. Definitely excited about that one, as well.

This is my first Mosaic purchase -- I was going to go for the Mobley first, but didn't want to miss out on the Mitchell. I'm hoping the Mobley doesn't show up on the running low list too soon!!

Dumb question: how come I have #3555/#5000? These must come off the shelves randomly?

Uncle Skid,

Seems you and I have very similar taste... The Moncur Select was my first Mosaic purchase as well. Followed by the Mobley (Christmas gift) and, most recently, the Blue Mitchell. :D

Mine's #3475, by the way.

street singer - I assume you are as happy with your purchases as I am? I've only listened to the first disc of each, and I'm just blown away by this music. Can't wait to listen to the rest of it.

How's the Mobley set? I've seen lots of high recommendations for that one, as well.

More importantly (since buying the Mobley's already a done deal for me, just need to wait until next month): what's next??

I've got my eyes (and ears) on the Carmell Jones Select. I've listened to the sound samples on the Mosiac website, and they are sounding really good to me. Also found this thread to find out what other board members think about this set.

As far as the big box sets go (after Mobley), there's just too many I want to narrow it down just yet. The Byrd/Adams, Tristano.Konitz/Marsh, Morgan/Shorter and the Kelly/Chambers are all high on the list.

Dang, this is an expensive hobby!!! B) ;)

Big Wheel, do not hesitate. The entire set is good, including the last two sessions.

Uncle Skid,

Yes, I'm enjoying the Blue Mitchell very much and am extremely glad that I was able to pick it up before it became unavailable. There are some absolute gems on these discs: "Alone, Alone And Alone", "Perception", "One Shirt" "Blues 3 For 1"...I'm still absorbing all this music, but those are the ones that really jumped out at me. I know there are ones I'm forgetting...

The Mobley is, ofcourse, excellent. Out of all the Mosaics (in print and out of print), this is the one that I wanted the most. Mobley is simply without question, the man. :D If you're a Mobley fan, this is simply a MUST HAVE. The only other way to get the bulk of these recordings is to spend a lot more money importing them or get lucky and find them on vinyl. Do yourself a big favor: GET THIS SOON!!!

What's next? Well, for me, it's definitely the Carmel Jones and Curtis Amy Selects. After that, I'm going to allow myself one Mosaic select per month, starting with #3, and continue in the order of their release. The price of these sets allows me to do that, and judging from the quality of the Mosaic sets I have so far, I simply do not want to miss any of these!

As for the big boxes - there are many that look wonderful, but the budget simply does not allow for me to get every one that I would like! The ones that I will definitely get, at some point in the future (more than likely birthday/Christmas gifts), are these: Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams, Gerry Mulligan CJB, Tristano/Konitz/Marsh. I might be tempted to go for the J.J. Johnson when it's on the Running Low list. We'll see... A coworker of mine just received the Morgan/Shorter the other day and I can personally attest to the quality of that one. While I do very much prefer their later work, this one would definitely be a good one to have as well.

You're right, this is an expensive hobby...especially when you include the "audio equipment" side of it...but, I can't think of a more rewarding and enjoyable one. Can you? ;)
