GA Russell Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 I've received a promo of an album which I think many people here would like called Alternate Side by New Tricks. The band is trumpet, sax, bass and drums. The sound is very much like Ornette Coleman's group of fifty years ago, although the band stresses that their compositions are based on chords (unlike many of Coleman's). The group is led by two guys from Cleveland - Mike Lee on sax and Ted Chubb on trumpet. Lee was a roommate and bandmate of Dave Douglas for two years, and was also a member of Joe Lovano's Celebrating Sinatra band. You can listen to samples from the album here: http://newtricksjazz.com/listen/ Quote
GA Russell Posted August 18, 2011 Author Report Posted August 18, 2011 I don't usually like free jazz or anything close to it, but I've really been enjoying this one. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 31, 2013 Author Report Posted March 31, 2013 I've been enjoying this one today, and I see that it is now up on Spotify. Search for "New Tricks". Quote
CraigP Posted April 3, 2013 Report Posted April 3, 2013 Thanks for the tip - I'll take a listen. I have an old Omnitone release by Mike Lee called My Backyard. (If it's the same Mike Lee) Quote
