Noj Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Not sure if this fits the funk that y'all are discussing here, but because The Meters were mentioned, I feel compelled to recommend to you "Street Parade" under Earl King. This music has been repackaged at least once. No matter. This is one amazing album with The Meters as the rhythm section PLUS horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint. 1972. So good. Loving this one! Got it for four clams plus shipping. Thanks .:.! Quote
.:.impossible Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 (edited) Oh man. That album is so good. Glad you picked up on it. The intro to "Street Parade"/"Am I Your Dog" is killing! Edited May 14, 2011 by .:.impossible Quote
Van Basten II Posted June 15, 2011 Author Report Posted June 15, 2011 (edited) get this one, quick: Found this one cheap, listening to it right now, am subscribing to your sentiments, it makes me move in a way a man my age shouldn't... Edited June 15, 2011 by Van Basten II Quote
Dave James Posted June 15, 2011 Report Posted June 15, 2011 I was trying to make a point with some friends of mine who are all excited about a band called Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears. My argument was that there's really nothing new under the sun and to put as fine a point on this as I could, I offered up a YouTube clip of James Brown. It's remarkable to me what this guy could do with a song as simple as "Get Up Offa That Thing". There's really nothing here, no lyrics to speak of...just the same riff repeated over and over again, but he cranks it up to a whole different level. It's like a fire drill. Brown was not just the hardest working man in show business, he may also have been the most exciting. Check out the audience, they're almost as into this as he is. One of the great missed musical opportunities in my life came in 1966 when I turned down a free ticket to see James Brown here in Portland. I often wonder WTF I was thinking. Quote
Noj Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 Stone Coal White I'm curious to hear this reissue, since I have one track from this band on a bootleg compilation of obscure funk called Chains & Black Exhaust. Their song was one of the best ones on it. Quote
Pete C Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 Some of the funkiest shit I know is Jorge Ben Jor. Some recommended discs: http://www.amazon.com/Brazilian-Hits-Funky-Classics-Jorge/dp/B00005NSWV/ http://www.amazon.com/Live-Rio-Jorge-Ben-Jor/dp/B000005TQ5/ This is a great compilation, not sure how easy to find CDs, but downloads readily available: http://www.amazon.com/Hooked-on-samba/dp/B0015O4UCY/ Quote
Adam Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 (edited) For Jorge Ben, also (or start with) get Africa Brasil. One of the greatest albums of all time. In any genre, I think. Edited August 25, 2011 by Adam Quote
Pete C Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 For Jorge Ben, also (or start with) get Africa Brasil. One of the greatest albums of all time. In any genre, I think. Absolutely, but the late-'70s/early '80s material has more pure funk influence. Quote
