clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 Agreed, love the music but it's rough-sounding in spots. Quote
walt Posted March 20, 2013 Report Posted March 20, 2013 Estilhacos,Live in Lisbon is quite good, one of the best archival live Lacy's i've heard.I wish Flakes, the 1974 session on Italian RCA, would see the light of day on cd.I recall Flakes with affection. I wish i saw cds from Steve Potts. Quote
StarThrower Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 How about the duo album Sidelines, on Paul Bley's label? I've never heard of this one, but I like the sound of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-aX6kla25Y Quote
jeffcrom Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 How about the duo album Sidelines, on Paul Bley's label? I've never heard of this one, but I like the sound of it. It's good. I don't know if this will make any sense, but I've always thought that Michael Smith's playing provided Lacy with the most most sympathetic and fitting piano accompaniment he ever had. That's not the same thing as saying that Smith was the best pianist to play with Lacy - he certainly wasn't, from a jazz standpoint. But his accompaniments seemed totally locked into Lacy's vision. Carl Baugher Posted April 8, 2013 Report Posted April 8, 2013 The quality of Steve's musical efforts is only surpassed by the quality of the man himself. One of the true gentlemen in jazz history. He had an amazingly broad knowledge of art in general. The time I spent with him in the eighties when he was touring with Mal Waldron was unforgettable. Much love to the memory of the great Steve Lacy! Quote
7/4 Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Steve Lacy (July 23, 1934 – June 4, 2004) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Wish I'd had the chance to interview him. Saw him a couple of times, spoke with him once and he was very nice and funny. Quote
king ubu Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Wow, that long. Great photo above. Guess it might finally be time to listen to that solo concert on Intakt. Never dared to so far, the memories are that deep. Quote
romualdo Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 i was lucky enough to meet & converse with him when he played here in Brisbane in the late 90's He had that special "aura" about him Really miss him - can't believe it's 10 years since his passing Quote
Leeway Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 Quite a good essay about Lacy by Stuart Broomer in the current Point of Departure: http://www.pointofdeparture.org/PoD49/PoD49Ezz-thetics.html Quote

Jason Bivins Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 I've been listening through all my Lacy lately, going chronologically, and the breadth of his work and his development across different formats/instrumentations continues to blow me away. I maintain my soft spot for Futurities (I'm in the 1980s now) but you simply cannot argue with Blinks, Cliches, or Morning Joy. Quote
colinmce Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 There are two new volumes of Lacy-Centazzo-Carter from 1976 out on Ictus April 21: http://www.amazon.com/October-Steve-Carter-Andrea-Centazzo/dp/B00TAFFO20/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1424278427&sr=8-5&keywords=steve+lacy+centazzo Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 I wonder if the recording quality on this forthcoming release is better then "lost in June" which was just sourced from an audience tape... Quote
Late Posted February 18, 2015 Author Report Posted February 18, 2015 I maintain my soft spot for Futurities (I'm in the 1980s now) ... A favorite here as well. Not many people seem to get into those two discs. (You have to like Irène.) Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 That is very true regarding the Irene quotient on "futurities". It's actually one of my least favorite from the 80s though I can't say it's entirely because of Irene... My faves from the 80s Hat titles are "prospectus" and "morning joy". Quote

Sounds like the Spirit Of Monk got into him. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 Blinks, Cliches and Morning Joy are my favorites Seems the 80's have a great mix of the earlier grit and a mature very accomplished band at the height of their powers. Quote
