romualdo Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 Not sure if a thread has already been commenced on this wonderful label Over the past 2 years or so Candid (UK) have been releasing titles from this mid to late 70's Japanese label (some were recorded in the 80's & released on other labels). I've picked up eight of these, mostly the predictable titles - Air, Walt Dickerson, Ted Curson, Don Pullen (wasn't a Whynot LP release), Muhal Richard Abrams but recently I had a go at two of the more obscure artists ie Monty Waters & Charles Sullivan - both have a very small recorded legacy (Sullivan was also released on Strata East which was reissued on Inner City - currently available) but both of these sessions are tremendous. Charles Sullivan sounds a tad like Woody Shaw. Wonder why these guys never had greater exposure? Other releases include Chico Freeman - Lord Riff & Me, Morning Prayer Donald Smith - Luv George Cables - Why Not Joe Lee Wilson - Shout For Trane Joseph Bonner - Triangle Kenny Barron - Live Manhattan Graffiti Four - MG4 Sonny Fortune - Invitation Walt Dickerson - 1976 Any comments on these releases would be most welcome Quote
jazzbo Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I recommend the Joe Lee Wilson, one of his best. I really dig the Monty Waters! I need to pick up some more of these, the Sullivan, Smith and Bonner for sure. Perhaps also the Dickerson which I hear is very good. Quote
bertrand Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I was tempted by the Dickerson, but because they are Candid, I was wondering if these were in fact CDRs. Anyone know? Bertrand. Quote
sonnymax Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I was tempted by the Dickerson, but because they are Candid, I was wondering if these were in fact CDRs. Anyone know? Bertrand. Since when were Candid releases CDRs? Are you thinking of Black Saint/Soul Note? Quote
JETman Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 No they are not cdrs. You are incorrect, sir. I've bought many of them since the beginning of the reissue campaign, and a few were CDR's. I do not remember which ones, though. Quote
djcavanagh Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I have the Dickerson and it is a cd (and is also terrific). Quote
Justin V Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I had been trying to track down the Don Pullen for a year or two before it was finally reissued, and I somehow haven't purchased it yet. That's a major oversight on my part. Quote
bertrand Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I believe the new batch of Candids were CDRs. There was a thread somewhere. Bertrand. Quote
AllenLowe Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 there were definitely Candid cdrs - I had the Jaki Byard and the Max Roach, and both were CDRs - Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 There are Candid CD-Rs. The Whynot Candid CDs I have had are CDs. So there you go. Quote
JETman Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 There are Candid CD-Rs. The Whynot Candid CDs I have had are CDs. So there you go. Again, not all of the Why Not's are CD's. Maybe Britain just doesn't like me! Quote
romualdo Posted May 2, 2011 Author Report Posted May 2, 2011 Excuse me for appearing ignorant but how do you tell the difference? I've never purchased a commercially available CDr before I bought most of my Candids (except the Whynots) in the 90's - were they releasing CDr's then? Quote
jazzbo Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 (edited) Maybe a few bootlegs were released on cdr then. . . . The easiest way to tell cdr from cd is "tint." Most common these days is a light green tint. There are also blue, purple, black. . . Some are hardly tinted at all though, that's become quite common on purchased cdrs. Plus they just look different, they don't look as if they're uniformly a plated finish, They often to me seem to look as if they're covered with a host of concentric circles barely visible. djcavanagh Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 For want of a better phrase the cd-rs just aren't as "shiny". Quote
brownie Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Why Not albums wdere carefully produced and manufactured. Bought several of them when they came out (on vinyl): Air, Ted Curson, Walt Dickerson Charles Sullivan. There is also an Andrew Cyrille album (Junction) that also came out on IPS. Excellent sound on all those I heard. Quote
king ubu Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Got a few of the CDs ("Air Raid", the Dickerson) and definitely got to get more of them! Quote
sidewinder Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 I have the George Cables on vinyl (very nice) and would really like to get the Walt Dickerson ! Quote
mracz Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 I have the George Cables on vinyl (very nice) and would really like to get the Walt Dickerson ! New member here. Yes the Dickerson is excellent. I have the Japanese version. The other Dickerson disc from this time (Tell me only the beautiful things) is even better. The opening unaccompanied solo on the first track is one of my favourite Dickerson moments, and Ware is very fine throughout. The two Air albums also fine. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 Yeah, the Dickerson rules - I have that on both CD and on vinyl. Quote
JSngry Posted May 2, 2011 Report Posted May 2, 2011 The mysterious Red Trumpet used to carry this label on a regular basis, and often enough on sale. Everything I got was good or better. Quote
