Yeah, Members is such a great album, and I'd forgotten fully half of it was tunes by Cowell.

I just ordered Max Roach's "Lift Every Voice and Sing" (from half.com) -- and had to go with the cheap "Collectables" version which is paired with "Members..." on the same disc.

So, depending on how the sound quality and packaging/notes are, I could maybe have an extra copy of "Members..." if the OP is still looking for one.

I've thought the sound on the Collectables Atlantic stuff has seemed pretty good overall. Collectables came a long way from their early needle-drop beginnings, though they will never be an audiophile label. Of course, with the warehouse fire, there won't be audiophile vintage Atlantic stuff anyways.

I didn't think much of Collectables mastering on the Heath Brother's twofer (with SC of course).

I think my favorite album by Cowell is Blues for the Viet Cong on Arista.

aka "Travellin' Man" on Black Lion.

The BL is the only CD issue of this material I know; has this session ever been released on CD under the "Blues for..." title??

Brilliant Circles is brilliant, but I've never heard a copy that didn't sound like the worst recorded studio recording in the history of mankind. (In all fairness, I've only ever heard the Black Lion CD issue of it.)

Great session -- hell, it's got both Tyrone and Woody!! -- but that sound, that sound!! :alien:

You are certainly correct about that. I have the original gatefold LP which has magnificent fidelity. Sadly, I sprung some years ago for the Black Lion CD of the date you mention and it sounds absolutely horrible. Now that I have a CD-R deck, I think I'll make a copy directly from the LP for car and I-Pod purposes.

I would get a good Stanley Cowell collection, anybody's. Since reading these posts, I grabbed used copies of what I could for reasonable bucks: Piano Jazz series disc with McPartland and SC's Maybeck Recital. Wow, he is exciting, so agile with blues and composition. I want to hear more. Thanks for the prompts here. I have SC's Blues For The Vietcong on vinyl. Turntable went down a few years back and I never played it. Maybe now though.

The Charles Tolliver Mosaic Select is a really good showcase for Cowell.
