Chuck Nessa Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 Not supposed to be announced for a couple of months, but the Chicago Tribune spilled the beans. Quote
johnlitweiler Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 The NEA sure took their time. Compliments are nice but will Von get any $ for this? Heard him in Feb. when he gave an advertised concert and public interview with Howard Reich. He preferred to tell stories most of the evening - the interviewer got in about 3 widely separate sentences - and did not want to play, was having horn trouble, a borrowed mouthpiece I believe. They begged him so he played 2 songs, 1 short. The whole event was because he'd received another award and he had to sing for his supper, so to speak - many video cameras around. It seemed like the people who gave him the award were torturing an 87-year-old man. I hope the NEA doesn't do something like this to him. Quote
papsrus Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Wonderful to hear that Von Freeman has been awarded this honor. And yes, do hope there's a nice chunk of change involved. Quote
paul secor Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Finally! He's deserved this and more for so many years. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Couldn't happen to a nicer person. Quote
mikeweil Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Long overdue, but finally it happened ... Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 i am happy he is being recgnoized, but you and me and we all know we dont need **any** national accedidtation to know Von Freeman is an *amazing* tenor saxophonist. Since they have this award, im happy he got it, but its a club he already is in, JAZZ MASTER Quote
brownie Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 More honors for Von Freeman... from The Chicago Tribune today! Quote
paul secor Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 God bless Von Freeman. May he play on. Quote
Justin V Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 More honors for Von Freeman... from The Chicago Tribune today! I planned on making my first trip to Chicago to catch this concert, but car problems derailed that plan. It should be a great night of music, though. Vonski deserves the attention, and the lineup is top-notch. Quote

jlhoots Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 I heard A.B. Spellman speak tonight. He didn't seem very optimistic about the future of the NEA jazz masters program. He didn't elucidate in great detail. Quote
Leeway Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Wonderful to hear that Von Freeman has been awarded this honor. And yes, do hope there's a nice chunk of change involved. There is a one-time grant of $25,000 to each recipient. I heard A.B. Spellman speak tonight. He didn't seem very optimistic about the future of the NEA jazz masters program. He didn't elucidate in great detail. The NEA and NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) have been long-time objects of Republican ire (sorry, not trying to be political, just the reality of what is going on in DC). It is doubtful if, after the current budget crisis, there will be sufficient funding to maintain such a program. There might not be sufficient funding to maintain such an agency! Republicans have been trying to eliminate both for years. A.B, having worked on the inside, knows this, but wants to avoid drawing any more hostile interest to the agency. Quote
