JSngry Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Been listening to him on Roy Burrowes Sextet - Live At The Dreher and am really liking how he plays. Did a Google search, and wow, he pretty much sounds like he looks! A really nicely variated phases-of-strangulation tone, a fine rhythmic feel that puts his swing in sync with his tone, and a good ear for changes & possibilities therein. Anyway, this one album is the only place I've heard him, but it appears that he's been around for a while, so those who can sing his praises, please do! Quote

JSngry Posted April 15, 2011 Author Report Posted April 15, 2011 Wow, that;s kinda painful, what with that rhythm section... Raux is heard to much better advantage on the Burrowes album, where he's got Mal Waldron comping behind him, and a repertoire more, uh, less, uh...well, you know... 1. Old Compton Street (R. Burrowes) 2. Hard Talk (M. Waldron) 3. Sometimes (R. Burrowes) 4. Jamaica (R. Burrowes) 5. Searching (R. Burrowes) 6. Sea Gulls (Mal Waldron) 7. Symphony In Blues (R. Burrowes) 8. Going Back Home (R. Burrowes) Roy Burrowes - trumpet, flugelhorn Richard Raux - tenor & soprano sax Mal Waldron - piano Patrice Caratini - bass George Brown - drums Roger Raspail - percussion on 4 & 8 Recorded live at jazz club Le Dreher, Paris, March 10, 1980 Marge 14 Quote
brownie Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Fine player. Have heard him live to good advantage with Eddy Louiss back in the '80s. Richard Raux Quote
relyles Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 Now listening to a private recording of a Sunny Murray performance from 1989 in Raab, Austria with Raux, Curtis Clark and Tony Overwater. Never heard of him before so I did a good search and came across this old thread. I am intrigued. Quote
brownie Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) Richard Raux in September 2000 at the Paris club Sunset, with Olivier Hutman, piano, Wayne Dockery, bass, and Charles Bellonzi, drums... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5mjc6F0Bm4 Edited June 25, 2013 by brownie Quote
dova Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Is this Roy Burrowes Live session any good? I haven't a clue except with MaL Waldron, that does prop it up some. Quote
king ubu Posted November 1, 2013 Report Posted November 1, 2013 Not life-changing ... but if you can get it for change (like I did, several years back), get it! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 I only know him from a little bit of work w/ Sunny Murray and Alan Silva/IACP. Good player. Quote
Leeway Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 I posted this over in the Vinyl Thread; did not see this thread. Anyway, Raux is on this album and does a really good job, along with Bobby Few Alan Silva, Pablo Sauvage and Sunny Murray: Quote
