Hardbopjazz Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Anyone know who this is? This is from 1958. Sorry but it's the best screen shot I could produce. Quote
Chalupa Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Looks like Mary Osborne to me. Good call. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 My thought too, but her name is not mentioned so far. I am 15 minutes into the video. Quote
fasstrack Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 I would agree that it is Mary Osborne. I know what she looks and sounds like. Main influence: Charlie Christian. Interesting that they're playing on I Found a New Baby changes--a Goodman favorite that he featured Christian on. Also:from the set it looks like the old Art Ford Jazz Party on PBS. There's probably all kinds of clips from that show floating around youtube. Also at the Museum of Television in NY and LA. Quote
Larry Kart Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 What a swinger she was. She heard Charlie Christian with Alphonso Trent in North Dakota (she was from Minot) back in the 1930s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec2aTghDwec&feature=related Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) Yes, definitely Mary Osborne--this dates from around the time she was working with Tyree Glenn, and the show is indeed Art Ford's Jazz Party. Recent Night Lights program: Mary Osborne: Queen of the Jazz Guitar Edited April 13, 2011 by ghost of miles Quote
fasstrack Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Maybe some sleuth here can dig up more Art Ford from youtube or elsewhere. I used to be a member of the Museum of Television and Radio here in NY. By sheer serendipity I found lots of those shows. Just off the top of my head I remember seeing Pres, Lady, Rex Stewart, Vic Dickenson, Bean, a 10-year-old Barry Miles, Ray Bryant, Mundell Loewe----too many more to remember now, including some 'no-names'that were phenomenal players. Wow! That oughtta be covered here---if it hasn't already. Quote

Sounded like his touch on I Love Paris---but no 'signature' figures, runs or anything. And dig that still with all the hair! Quote

My laptop's running slow since it was cleaned out and started fresh. Too bad. Nice article, though---nice tribute to a working musician in the trenches. Quote
