Hardbopjazz Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Anyoneknow if Ira Coleman is still on the scene playing jazz? I have a Freddie Hubbard recording from the 1980s and he was really swinging the bass. I know he played on Sting's last recording. Quote
jazztrain Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 This article would suggest that he still does play jazz on occasion: Ira Coleman/Sting The article, from last July, includes the following: >>> Now 54, Coleman is gone five to seven months of the year and doesn't tend to go out too much when he's home. When he does play out, it tends to be with John Esposito and Peter O'Brien, with whom he has a modern jazz trio. "As much as I regret it, I'm not able to perform too much locally," Coleman said. "It's odd to live in an area and not work there. But that's the nature of my profession." >>> Anyoneknow if Ira Coleman is still on the scene playing jazz? jazztrain Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Then there's this: White Mountain Music Festival The blurb says that he's currently the music director for Dee Dee Bridgewater. Tom Storer Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 Coleman is a fantastic bassist. I saw him quite a few times in the 80's, for example playing with James Williams and Billy Pierce's groups. Really outstanding. I'm sure he's sincere about admiring Sting and learning from him, although perhaps he overdoes the fawning in that article; I'm also sure Sting knows that Coleman could teach him at least as much in return.
