Chalupa Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 Quincy, who hasn't wanted to slip and slide in a urinal? Uggla to 32 straight games! as of 10 PM EST, ESPN.com doesn't give a flying f***! Man, they covered Andre Ethier's 31 game streak like he was going to break DiMaggio's record.... You have a legit gripe there. I had to check the box score to find out. And how about Zambrano giving up 5 home runs(2 by Uggla!) in 4.1 innings?! Holy cow. Quote
BERIGAN Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 (edited) But, to be fair, they did start with it on baseball tonight.... Sad news tonight, Ernie Johnson Sr, MLB pitcher and longtime Braves announcer has passed, he was 87. You would have had to have watched a TBS in the 80s's to remember him...or baseball fan in the 50s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernie_Johnson_%28pitcher%29 Edited August 13, 2011 by BERIGAN Quote
JSngry Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 I did watch baseball a lot in the early 80s, most of it on WTBS, and I do remember Ernie Jonson. Fondly too. Sorry to hear of his passing. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 (edited) wtbs- the first superstation. for several years, tbs replayed the braves games in the night owl hours, and i usually watched the games after working second shift. ernie, funny irreverant skip caray, and pete van wieren. i haven't enjoyed baseball as much since. i knew the braves players of the time like members of my family. the crew doubled up on radio(powerhouse wsb) as well. the highly professional ernie and pete played straight men for comedian caray. ironically ernie's death was announced during tonight's braves-cubs game where longtime braves manger bobby cox was honored. for old times sake, the plate umpire 'threw' cox out of the game. uggla extended his hitting streak to 32 with 2 home runs. not to be outdone, cub pitcher carlos zambrano performed his annual locker clean out-i'm retiring tantrum. memories of the hilarious tbs late night 'newscaster'' bill tush return, as well. tush never translated his humor into a wider career, which really surprised me. i remember ernie's dry slightly hoarse measured voice. RIP ernie. you were a class act.unintentionally hilarious longtime yankee radiocaster john sterling was part of that tbs baseball crew for a time. i seem to recall sterling telecasting some atlanta hawks basketball games, as well. Quincy Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 Quincy, who hasn't wanted to slip and slide in a urinal? We popped into Tiger Stadium to catch one of the final games while on a cross country drive. Peeing in a urinal very much like the one in the Wrigley video was a rewarding experience as I imagined the millions of gallons of urine that had passed before me, some of it in-between innings with Ty Cobb & Harry Heilmann in the lineup. And I read in the paper the next day that that night someone tried to steal a urinal. Surely not the trough I used? How? It must have been a more personal-sized potty I didn't see in another bathroom. With enough beer (Old Style at Wrigley), gumption and no fear of cooties anything is possible. Uggla to 32 straight games! as of 10 PM EST, ESPN.com doesn't give a flying f***! Man, they covered Andre Ethier's 31 game streak like he was going to break DiMaggio's record.... Dan Patrick has been mildly fascinated by it as I've heard parts of his show the past 2 days. Today he set the over/under at 33 just because it's a hard thing to do and it's getting harder. Ernie had a connection to the Boston Braves. There's been tons of stuff written about the NY Giants and especially Brooklyn, but I confess other than knowing about Tommy Holmes streak I don't know much about the Braves time there. Quote

Both are great names though I think you'll have to agree, they pale in comparison with the infamous Rusty Kuntz: Quote
Dave James Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Turn back the clock day at Yankee Stadium. Hip hip Jorge logs three hits, six RBI's and a tater in five trips. Maybe there's some gas left in the tank. Quote

Both are great names though I think you'll have to agree, they pale in comparison with the infamous Rusty Kuntz: KOONTZ!!! :g There was a guy who didn't make it past the first round named Jhonaldo Pozo. I wonder if his walkup music is (or will be) "Manteca"...how cool would that be? From a holistic standpoint, you gotta like Callix Crabbe, who plays second for the fortuitously (for Mr. Crabbe) named New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Crabs, fish, makes me hungry for some gumbo... Hell, I got a pretty good AA team literally 20 minutes from my house. I really should go watch some minor league baseball as well as making the treks out to Arlington. Quote
BERIGAN Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 33 games. Amazing! First AB as well! And another homer to boot. Couldn't happen to a better guy, I don't know how he held it together, coming to a new team, in the same division, and sucking for 3 months...but everyone said he was working his butt off and never wanted a day off... Longest since Chase Utley's 35 game streak in 2006 (In my head, it was Benito Santiago's 34 game streak in 1987, gettin' old) Here is the list of the longest streaks all time http://www.baseball-almanac.com/feats/feats-streak.shtml Quote
Quincy Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 ...they pale in comparison with the infamous Rusty Kuntz: It was so sad that the '84 Tigers manhandled the Padres in 5 and Rusty didn't get more at bats, especially as Vin Scully was the announcer. Quote
Dave James Posted August 14, 2011 Report Posted August 14, 2011 Looks like Dan Uggla's streak may be coming to an end. He just grounded out to end the 7th inning and is 0-3 today. Barring a big inning by Atlanta, he 's not likely to see another at bat. Quote
Tim McG Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Hey! Giants actually win two in a row...woo, hoo! On to the Brav-o's. Maybe they can win at least one there. Grrrr Quote
jlhoots Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Brewers sweep Pirates. 5 games ahead of the Cardinals. Quote
BERIGAN Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Over. Yeah, too bad....He was almost on deck, Carlos Marmol was wild, already walked one, and Prado was up 3-1 and decided he had to swing, and popped it up...oh well... Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 15, 2011 Author Report Posted August 15, 2011 (edited) What a hideous and embarrassing weekend in Seattle. Even worse considering how well it started, with Sabathia getting knocked around for five solo homers, and a come-from-behind win to get the lead back to two games. But Saturday its Beckett vs King Felix only Beckett forgets to show up in the first inning, digging a five run deficit they can't quite erase. Then Wakefield throws 8 innings in 94 pitches and for one bad one, loses 5-3. Lead is 1/2 game and the Yankees visit the Royals while the Red Sox play three games in 27 hours against the Rays, facing their top three with their own two, three and five starters. May take a miracle for the Yankees not to take over first place this week. Edited August 15, 2011 by Dan Gould Quote
Quincy Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 What a hideous and embarrassing weekend in Seattle. It's a different team than the one that got pounded on at Fenway with at least 4 new guys in the lineup. Forget Justin Smoak, now it's Mike Carp at 1st! You can't have enough 25 year old 1st base prospects to pin your hopes to I always say. A new kid at 3rd, a LF platoon, and we even threw Willie Mo Pena out there to haunt his former team. Not sure about giving Willie Mo at bats over the kids, but if it were between Willie & Cust at this point I'll vote the former. Maybe these guys can play spoiler in September - or start another losing streak. Quote
paul secor Posted August 15, 2011 Report Posted August 15, 2011 Fine story in Sunday's Times about Conrado Morrero, 100 years old and the oldest living major leaguer, living in Cuba: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/14/sports/baseball/conrado-marrero-a-bridge-to-cubas-baseball-past.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=bridge%20to%20cubas%20baseball%20past&st=cse The Ted Williams story, even though it's evidently apocryphal, ia a good one. Chalupa Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) Damn. Watched the first three innings of the Braves/Giants game and the Braves were leading 2-zip and Hudson was dealing. Now I come back and it's 4-2 Giants. WTF?Javier Lopez of the Giants is just nasty on lefties. Edited August 16, 2011 by J.H. Deeley Quote
