king ubu Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 You can get "Big Chief" http://www.honestjons.com/shop.php?pid=34108&LabelID=15913&g=1 http://www.50milesofelbowroom.com/artist/147-sunny-murray.html Quote
Rupertdacat Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Sure... i'll rush right out and get a turntable (and arm, and cartridge, and interconnect, and phono pre-amp, and record cleaning machine, and nice wide shelf ... ). : ) Eremite has evidently not sold all of the 600 copies of this vinyl edition. I wonder what JLH could have done (might do?) with this music? Quote
Stefan Wood Posted September 19, 2013 Report Posted September 19, 2013 Not much better. Eremite did a good job on Big Chief. Quote

My wonder pertains to marketing/sales of the music in CD format (perhaps by JLH) compared with Eremite's vinyl only approach. Quote

jonathanhorwich Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 Dear All, as I look to the future, I'd like to have you all weigh in on your opinion of Jan Garbarek's The Esoteric Circle as a possible reissue. I ask because right now I'm leasing rights from Ace Records UK and they own the rights to the Garbarek performance. So it would be relatively easy. The question is quality of performance. I know it is at least a very good performance. I love many parts of it. But this is not a shoe-in like Hemphill, Dixon, Tapscott and Carter for me. I need some other views here. So would appreciate your weigh ins on this. I know there might be other performances I would put before this but with the opportunity to lease it at hand, I bring up this possibility now. Thanks. Yes, it is on CD in Japan but not widely available. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 It's a cool record and I enjoy it, but it's not a shoe-in for me either. I feel the same way about all the Garbarek/Rypdal LPs from that early era - really, really strong but not with that extra "oomph." Til Vigdis is pretty sick, but it may be harder to find a license for (early private pressing) and a level of common interest. Quote
colinmce Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 I could see it, but could definitely see others before it. The Fischer & Steig sets are fairly obscure but were reissued on the strength of your intense admiration of them. Both are records I never would have checked out without your word. If you see the Garabek-- which I haven't heard-- as good rather than essential, then don't do it just for ease. I'm sure there's another neglected work out there you believe in more. Quote

Head Man Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 It's a decent record but, for me, it's no more than that. Also, like you said, it has already been issued on CD albeit in Japan and I'm afraid that it's not one that I would buy again. I'm sure that Ace must have something more deserving of a reissue by you, Jonathan. Quote
felser Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 I would because It's right up my alley. But truth is, it's been 35 years since I heard it. Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Don't know it, but I like the Garbarek titles I have from that era, so I would buy it. How about some unreleased Jimmy Lyons (e.g. a legit Other Afternoons) or CTU performances for reissue? Complete Ornette Coleman w/ Izenson solo at Town Hall? Thanks Jonathan. Quote
mjzee Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 Amazon is currently offering an mp3 download of Esoteric Circle for $6, possibly further diluting your potential sales: Amazon Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 A bunch of Freddie McCoy albums on CD would go down nicely in my house MG Quote
jonathanhorwich Posted September 25, 2013 Author Report Posted September 25, 2013 (edited) Thank you all. I think we are all tracking. It is a very good performance but not quite there in the same league as what I try to do. Fischer is a work of genius and Steig is just an outstanding performance rarely heard and I think as good as flute gets in jazz. So I had no hesitation with them. This Garbarek thing is another matter. So I'll sit tight for now on that and get out the ones I have. Well last night I listened to the Tapscott performance again The Giant Awakens on the digital transfer we made and it sure sounds good. It is not a great audio recording but not too bad and the playing is just fabulous. Now that one I adore. Thanks again to everyone who weighed in. In a year I'm either going to stop putting out reissues or have to find another after the Daley trio stuff. "All" I have left is: Steig Flute Fever, Tapscott The Giant Is Awakened, Carter Bradford Self Determination Music and then Daley Live At Newport. Well on second thought that is a good two years of issues as I tend to put out 1 or 2 reissues a year. Edited September 25, 2013 by JLH Quote
Stefan Wood Posted September 25, 2013 Report Posted September 25, 2013 (edited) It's an excellent upcoming list of reissues. I'm sure we can all dig into the "archives" and provide worthy suggestions. For instance, the Sam Rivers tuba trio sessions from the mid 70s. Edited September 25, 2013 by Stefan Wood Quote

Just a word of enthusiasm/encouragement: I've gladly bought everything you've done thus far (Dogon AD is best reissue of the decade!), and I look forward to everything you list here in your line-up, especially the Joe Daley sides! jonathanhorwich Posted September 26, 2013 Author Report Posted September 26, 2013 Gee guys thanks. I figured out how to package the Joe Daley by the way so that hump is flattened. It will be gorgeous. Okay as we move forward we'll recoup all we've written and see if there is something killer to put out in two years. But for now I'm set. Quote
mjzee Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 Not sure your efforts are the right venue, but since you have an "in" with 1201 Music, it would be wonderful to have a properly-presented set of Monk's Black Lion recordings. Quote

mikeweil Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 JLH's standards are high, and so far the only suggestion in this thread worth consideration IMO would be the Ellington A Drum Is A Woman, which really cries out for proper presentation. I had hope for a Mosaic single of this, but ... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 There is a decent version in the recent Sony box. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 27, 2013 Report Posted September 27, 2013 Thanks - I looked at that box, but I already have too much of its contents. Quote
